Question for c12 cat owners

I have 2003 Magna that I had the coolant changed to cat coolant (elc?) I have noticed that i have been using a little each time I drive any distance.(no leaks that I can see) Is this normal??. Thanks for looking Vic 2003 Magna 6253

Check your transmission fluid level, is it rising? Do a pressure check on the cooling system to see if there are any leaks. At one time I had a leak that only manifested itself right after I turned the motor off and the temp went up. It was a loose hose clamp on the radiator. Another time it was the circulation pump failing that sends coolant to the front dash.. There is also another circulation pump. up front. But its usually the one in the engine compartment that fails first do to the high ambient temps.

Sometimes after a coolant change there are some trapped air bubbles . .. your system may be burping . .. been there.

Yep... Sounds like an air bubble to me too...
Vic: On my 'ol Magna there is a petcock at the top of the coolant hose that connects to the thermostat housing... You very likely have a similar set-up... It's easy to reach from the engine access door, but is difficult to see...
Once you locate the petcock, open it and run the engine for a few minutes and the bubbles will be vented from the system...
You will be amazed at how much air will come out... Close the petcock and top off the coolant...

I had to "bleed" my system several times to get out all the air...

My 2002 Magna has always done the same over time. No leaks. I was told that the brass thingy (sorry I cannot recall what it is called) near the top of the engine compartment that allows the Hurricane to equalize coolant pressure or something is responsible for slight coolant loss over time. Also, check around your radiator cap carefully for signs of leaking. You will not see fluid, only stains, since it evaporates from the heat.

Ken Former Cat Tech. Posts sounds good from fellow owners. After those issues be checked if you still loose ELC The biggie you can get a plastic CLEAR soda bottle and Clip it to the lower side of the radiator mounting bracket and put your rubber Exp. tank hose in the Plastic empty bottle drive the coach kinda hard like going up a hill. Return to your place and see if coolant drained in the plastic soda bottle. The Exp. tank Cap may be the issue. I have had many a diesel do this, the cap is ALWAYS OVERLOOKED! To think at one time got paid big bucks to do this. Rarely but has happend a head gasket but only working the engine hard like going a 8 percent hill for many miles was the cause.
