Dometic refrigerator

Hi All. The refrigerator in our 2002 Allure #30747 is not cooling. However the freezer portion IS freezing, and is now at 10 degrees. We have had it looked at and were told the seals needed replacement and were part of the door and in order to correct the seals the entire door would have to be replaced. Seems odd that just the seals could not be replaced.
We will be in Austin, TX in a day or two and meanwhile are limping along using the freezer and an ice chest. Don't want to rush into anything and get talked into replacing the entire (expensive) unit unless we have to.
Any suggestions, advice, from the group? We realize the unit is almost eleven years old and has not been shut down since we picked it up 8/14/01 Thanks, Gary

Gary:

I had a similar incident with my Dometic 1492. It turned out the refer side heating element failed. After replacing it, the refer worked properly. I would recommend checking that heating element before replacing the door gaskets.

Dometic customer service can probably explain the gasket replacement procedure if that is the issue. I have had good responses from them whenever I called.

Chuck,

Thanks for the response. I'll check out the heating element and also contact Dometic tomorrow. Feeling a little better.

The fact that the freezer works tells me that the refer is probably OK.
There is an electrical wire attached to the fins on the upper right side of the refer behind your food, and moving this up or down on the fin is the way you adjust refer temp. Sounds like yours might have been bumped and is no longer attached to the fin?

I was able to correct my Dometic problems by removing the Dometic, modifying the opening and inserting a new GE residential refrigerator.
I settled on an 18 cu ft to replace my 10 cu ft side by side Dometic.
The biggest problem now is putting up with the extra space inside the refer and I really miss defrosting the Dometic. HA!

The dometic refer in has finally died. Cannot find another refrigerator to fit in the same footprint of the current NDR 1292. Even had it checked and measured by Texas Custom Coach in Pipe Spring, TX and no way they can adapt it to the new refrigerators.
I've done quite a bit of searching on this site and other forums and found lots of info about the "Amish Cooling Unit". Most of the posts are over one year old. Just wondering if anybody who has installed this unit has had any problems. This appears to be the way we will go and will try and get Texas Custom Coach to install since I am not the least bit handy.
Thanks for any info,
Gary, 2002 Allure

Check Samsung counter depth french doors. There is one that is 19 cf that its in most coaches. Go to the Samsung site and get the measurements and then do your own. Check to see if you have extra inches around the existing fridge. We were able to have Oregon Motorcoach Center install a 21 cf Samsung french door in our Intrigue. They had to do some trimmin and we lost the 2 drawers under the Norcold. Works like a charm. Wish we had done it before we went to Alaska in '09.

Gary, locate the SEARCH window on this website and type in AMISH and you'll be able to read many opinions.

Mike, thanks for the reply. Sorry I wasn't clear but I have searched this site and got lots of info. My question is how are the Amish units doing now after a year or more of use. Most of the previous posts were positive concerning the units but I am just concerned about over the long haul. I know there is a 3 year warranty but even if that is good it's always a hassle. Just hedging my bets. Thanks for any feedback.
Also thanks to S. Brandt for the reply concerning Samsung. That is a good option but we don't want to give up the LP option.
