Power Reel

I was unpleasantly surprised this am leaving a campground when my power reel would not retract the cable. It retracts about 6 inches and then I hear what sounds like grinding gears. The same thing happens when I try to extend it but in this case I can pull the cable slowly out.
I pulled it all the way out and still no luck. So I coiled it up and tied it off to the tow hitch and proceeded. Got me to tonight's campground anyway.
I tried briefly to get access into the box over the reel but gave up. It is covered with rug although there are two seams running down the front about an inch in from the sides. I go that piece mostly up. It is glued down but that got me no closer. So does anyone know how to get that box up off the reel. Sawing it apart is definitely an option but risky since I don't know what I might saw into.

Don,

Been there, done that. As I recall CC glued some firing strips to the wall and the box fits on top of that strip with screws into the strip. The bottom left side is done the same way. If you can find the screws buried in the rug you are home free. But, they are small and very hard to find. Chances are you will do some minor damage by prying at the base and wall but not too much. That is what I had to do. When putting it back use some "L" brackets from the box to the floor and the box to the wall. That is what CC should have done to begin with. When mine sounded like yours it was toast. I have talked to the mfg and it is 50/50 whether or not you will get help in trying to fix it. Some of their folks are very helpful and some not. Don, this is my best recollection. Mine failed in 04 and now I CRS.

You might be able to use a magnetic stud finder to find the screws.

Don - How goes the power cord? Any updates?
I quite often have a problem for the final few feet. I stop, extend back out about two feet worth, make sure the cord is not twisted (I can still read the lettering on the cable, use that as the is it twisted or not test), the try to pull it back in again. With some slight positive pressure from me to help. Other then one time in the Teton's, I've been able to get it in the balance of the way. The time I could not, it was 28 outside, and I just secured the cable to the ladder and drove about an hour to the next park we were staying at... The next time, it made it in OK...)

Best of luck with yours!!!

hi don

the gear inside have broken this usually happens in cold climates because the cord reels were made for boats . they do have new gears available that are glass reinforced the were less than $50 direct from the company my cover came off easy there is only a few screws hidden in the carpet. On the unit there is a disconnect so that you push the cable in by hand. the new gears come with very good instructions and is easy to do

Thanks Mike. I can hear the broken gears so I am sure you are correct. I will get the box off when I arrive at my site and go from there.

Thanks again
