Looking for a basic, used DirecTV Receiver

Yahoo Message Number: 79281
Hi Gang.

I'm looking for a basic used model to use with a non-HD TV so a plain vanilla model in good working condion, with the ACCESS Card of course, will do.

Thanks for the tip on Amazon, etc.
But DTV wants $20 for a new access card. You can get a new one for $69.
Given the used price + shipping + $20 access card . . . forgetaboutit.

Thx,
Lee

Contact Bob Vinson @ Oregon Motorcoach Center, I believe he has some used units for sale.

I have an older Sony DTVreceiver. I talked to DTV about activating the receiver for my guest house in AZ for the winter. They said because I had had this receiver active at an earlier time they would activate that receiver on my account but they volunteered that if I passed the receiver on to someone else they would no longer activate it because it was so old. So check with DTV to See if they will activate any given receiver.

Just a word of caution.

Hi Bo. Good advice. I am discovering that this is not so simple.

I obtained an older DVR and card from my daughter and tried to activate it with Direct TV. They would not do so even though one of my receivers is much older.
A year ago, they would only activate the unit if it had an ID number, not just a model number. Who knows what their requirements are today?
Be careful buying someone's card, as it may have unpaid charges on the card's account that exceed the value of the receiver.

Hi Dean. Yes, I've learned that the first thing you do before accepting a receiver is to call DirecTV with the ID to determine it's status, as you have so well put it.

Happily I'm still checking out units.

Thanks for your offer of the DirecTV Receiver. I have located a suitable unit, which I should receive this week. If it does not work out I may get back to you.
I did learn that many used receivers can not be used by another account as the original owner is defined by DTV as having leased the unit. About half of those I checked on were in this category.

Thanks again,
Lee

Another thing I found out is that if you go into Best Buy or wherever, the salesmen don't even know that when you buy these brand new from them, you are getting a leased receiver and signing into the famous contract. I still have mine for sale when you come to the end of your trail.
