Shunt installation

I bought a Tri-metric 2025 with a 500 amp shunt. As far as I can tell, the correct way to install it is to wire it between the negative battery post and the exiting negative battery cable. Do I have this right? Also, should I worry about cutting all the power to/from the battery before removing the negative cable? I know the house battery disconnect does not do this. Thanks.
