Refer Recall

The issue with my recall part is it did exactly what is supposed to do. In my conversation regarding by-passing the recall part with Kevin Waite he repeated that there would be no protection. He advised me to watch it carefully to make sure there were no issues after the by-pass.
Kevin was correct, within 30 minutes, I had left the outside cover off to do the follow up and there was the beginnings of additional heat coming off the heating coils. I shut down the refer and call Kevin again to let him know what I found. He agreed that shutting down was correct.
I have since had a Norcold service tech determine that I did indeed have an ammonia leak and the cooling system would need to be replaced.
Kevin was very adamant that I watch the cooling unit very carefully and he was correct.

Again Kevin was on his game regarding my cooling system problem.

Thanks again Kevin for all the help you give to us.

Jock - Happy you found this and it did not lead to a fire. Great that Kevin, as seeminly always, looks out for us all at times...
Norcold? I try to stop posting my thoughts about them on this and other boards, as it does not seem to be helping. I have sent my emails to them, to different agency and government officials.

IMO, they:

-Had a quality problems coupled with a margional design cooling unit.
-They straight armed problems as they came in. When forced, did a recall. When forced, expanded the recall.
-When the recall did not work, they did another.
-When it too did not work, they did another recall. This recall is now on revision E (I think), and usually does seem to be able to stop a fire. However it too is a mickey mouse response, as it leaves customers with a fridge that will not work.
They have lost as much credibility on the street, as Workhorse did with their lack of recall on their brake problems.
If they had jumped on this quicker, and resolved the design problems on the unit, several more years of risk fridges would have been avoided.
IMO, they should make a deal that provides the units at their costs for replacement, and ask the consumer to cover the labor costs of install (for unit not within the warranty period, those they should cover the full thing). Yes it would hurt, but probably not have put them under. They would have 'done the right thing'.
This is killing people, losing property - just as the Workhorse brake problem had life risks and property loss associated to it.
It is not easy to 'do the right thing', and as National saw when they did to step up and take care of the delamination problems, coupled on top of a sales slow down - it did probably contribute to their demise. But, doing the right thing usually has away of working out best in the long term.
I kept my 1200, added the new Amish Coolin Unit, SS30, extra fans, and smoke detector. I did this all on my dime, after the first recall. I wanted LP, and I liked the size of the unit. That was my choice.
When in doubt about your Norcold - TURN IT OFF - until doubt is removed.

Jumping back off of my horse for now:)!

Be safe, have fun,
Smitty

Smitty - It's good to speak out as you did. Well said, to the point, appropriate and accurate. I couldn't agree more.
I too did the Amish cooling unit and so far so good. On temperature setting 7, I get 0-5F in the icebox and ice cold soda, water and milk in the frig with outsides temps in the 80s. As for safety, I'm going to experiment with my own ideas as I think it's a good idea to monitor this type of cooling unit. I don't use the propane (I could but don't) feature. Instead I've installed a relay in my fuse box to patch over the cooling unit's heaters to the invertor sub-panel as required. Not a big amperage draw and no AC induction motor starters to be concerned about.
As for the Samsung frig, I think it's a great idea and it's very good folks are experimenting with different solutions. In our case, I don't want to lose my two drawers under the frig or take out the front windshield. But it's good to know this is an option, however, for those who are comfortable with all aspects of the change out. Best yet is the feedback coming from people that know best. All of you. Thanks.
