3M 5200

I noticed some stripping along side a slide that was pulling off the slide. I need a quick bonding product. It will have to be waterproof. Will 3M 5200 do the job? Thanks, John

The 5200 is not quick bonding. To obtain max strength, it will take up to 24 hours. Just make sure that what you bond together, you want to stay bonded as removing 5200 isn't easy. Great stuff.

I have used 3M 5200 with excellent results. Bonding is permanent so, be sure everything is secured and held exactly where it needs to be during the cure. Complete curing takes several days. 3M makes a similar product that cures faster but the advice offered by the local West Marine rep is to use the 5200 for best results. 3M now offers a new fast cure adhesive/sealant: 4200UV. It is said to have better UV resistance. I purchased a 10 Oz. tube at West Marine for about $22. Available in white or black. I will report on this application later. Both are flexible and have the conssitancy a little more fluid than silicone. Use care when applying as it can be messy. You may want to mask depending on your application. The 90 degree strips at the corners of your slides should be mechanically attached with fasteners. There are a lot of previous posts on this. You will learn a lot worthwhile advice if you research the archives.
BTW I have practically abandoned silicone after I learned about these sealant/adhesives. Sika also offers a similar product called Sika-flex. But in my experience the 3M products work better.

We used the 5200 with a combo drilling wholes and screwing the strip tight to the side. Used SS screws, and as I recalled it was a hard drill job!!! Normal best practices of cleaning the area for 5200 application well. Besides screwing, I also used Gorila Tape to help as it was bonding too... I left the slide out for the full 24 hours cure time.
Scott has some pictures on how he also used a vinly tape over the edge of the stip to the side of the slide, to aid in keeping water from seeping into the seam. Yes, the 5200 should do this too, but I liked how he did this. Just have not found the right color of vinly tape to do so yet...
Do a search, and you should be able to find the postings on this from a few months ago.

Country Coach used high carbon steel in most places which has a higher strength to weight ratio a cobalt drill bit should be used. Bob 06 intrigue 12047

Additional info regarding 3M 5200 vs. 3M 4200: 3M website indicates that the fast cure 3M 4200 product has about half of the adhesive strength of 3M 5200.

5200 come in fast cure and regular. I really takes a week to get to full cure. It also comes in clear and white. I will provide a weather proof seal. I have used it many times for many successful applications on my boat, but there is one draw back. Removal can be almost impossible so you need to view what you are gluing together is something you don't want ever take apart. The white does not discolor from UV.

If it is trim, use the red 3M automotive trim tape. Available at any auto parts place in small rolls or a auto paint supply store in larger rolls. That is what was used originally on my coach. I just removed my stainless strips across the back of my coach, cleaned the surfaces up and used the red 3M tape on it. Worked great.
