length of messages/tutorial/Att: Herb Strandberg

Herb, I wonder if it would be in order to provide a short tutorial, (or if one currently exists, to repost it) that would help the forum membership shorten up the messages posted. I note that nearly every day, the total message has been truncated, presumedly because of the overall length. The latest discussion on battery charging is an example where every post contains a copy of everything posted on the subject to date. Seems a serious waste of bandwidth. Perhaps the membership could be reminded to just snip the subject when responding rather than copy the entire text? That would sure help shorten the time it takes to wade through the info.

"Seems a serious waste of bandwidth." Are you Kidding? It doesn't take me any longer to delete them with this "serious violation" of the way you would like to see it rather than the way it is. I would think most of the people on this forum are older retired individuals that I'm sure are doing this just to hack you off.
Could it be they just forgot to due a little maintenance after their nightly cocktails. I just left mine to help support all of the suppliers of bandwidth - no cocktails.
Ease up a little and hit the delete key a little faster.

Clearly Kevin , you know not of what you speak !!. Some of the strings have been extra -ordinarily long and these messages are being repeated, unnecessarily. All you have to do when replying to a posting, is hit REPLY, and then click on the top, hold the shift button, and move your cursor to the bottom , it will be highlighted, and hit the DELETE key, and all will be deleted. There is an enormous amount of repetitiveness, and therefore , an enormous waste of bandwidth, when you multiply by the number of people on this blog. We don't need this sort of response !!

"truncated?" I have not experienced this problem. The only time they look tuncated is if I don't click on the message to open it up, at which time the whole message always appears for me. IMO, the thread of a subject actually reduces the time to review the subject at hand. And, it doesen't seem like Yahoo is short of any "badwidth" because I haven't heard any complaints from them? The forum is very useful the way it is now. Lets not fix what ain't broke. JMO.

There are several different views on the subject of message length through the inclusion of replies to replies to replies .....
Of the several replies to this original message posted by JimH, opinions were shared by people with three different point of views:

1. JimH's view of the group is through the Daily Digest. This is a very nice way of keeping up with the group messages without filling your mailbox with 20-30 individual emails a day. Typically, one digest is received each morning, with all of the messages from the previous 24 hours. Typically about 200KB in size but sometimes as large as 500KB, because of replies to replies to replies. Delete key is not an option (the whole digest would be deleted), as you must scroll over each message to get to the last message in the digest. Normally not a problem, unless a half dozen members chime in on the subject, each including duplicate replies to replies to .... The truncation problem can occur on some smartphones which limit the length of the message sent to them -- my old Blackberry did that -- however on my current Droid, I set a very high default message size. Other smartphones limit the amount of the message originally brought down to the phone, and require you to press "more" to get addition pieces of a large message.

2. Larry has a different point of view with "Never had a truncate problem". Apparently he doesn't receive the Daily Digest, nor even Individual Messages, because his profile says "No Email". He must be viewing it from the website which never truncates a message.

3. Others who receive 20 - 30 Individual Messages each day, suggest using the delete key. Okay, if you don't mind flooding your mailbox with 20-30 messages each day from this Group.

4. You can also think of "Bandwidth" as personal "Bandwidth" -- messages per minute read by you, not megabits per second.

The belief that a member is seeing the whole thread of all replies to a topic, when looking at an email, is incorrect. If the original message is the trunk of a tree, then the replies are like the branches. You don't see the replies on the branch on the other side of the tree, just the ones on your limb. If you want to research all of the replies (on all the limbs), it is best to go to the CCO website where all the branches of the replies are diagrammed. Some people go back to the main message to reply. Several people may reply to the same message that just arrived, thereby creating three more branches.

I hate it when someone posts a message that says "Your idea worked?", without the original suggestion. A also hate seeing replies to replies to replies to replies to replies to replies to replies to replies .... Plus I hate replies that do not add VALUE to other readers. "Thank you for your suggestion" should be done with a "Reply to Sender", not a "Reply to Group".

Suggestion:

1. Trim off unnecessary replies. I will even just keep a part of the original message -- the meaningful part -- at the end of my posting.

2. Make your message "Stand Alone". Restate the question, or solution provided to you, in your message. Delay your reply until you have tried the suggestion. Then report your finding to the group -- "Bob, your suggestion to reset the circuit breaker on the side of the inverter solved the problem with the Microwave Oven not working. You saved the day." Then delete all of the appended replies from your message.

3. There have been some message threads hijacked by changing the subject line when replying to message. Please start a new thread.

4. There is no need for five people to all provide the same phone number to a phone number request. For simple answers, check to see if someone replied already!!!

Picky? Maybe. But please try to keep these suggestions in mind.

Kevin...hack you off....ease up a little?...I think before you make such remarks you may wish to see what other replies come in before you hit the send key. Clearly you have no idea how difficult it is to retreive emails from the yahoo group using a smart phone. Reading them on a tiny screen is even a larger challange. Its bad enough that I have to scroll through endless repeats of the same thread only to find at the bottom of the postings the phone must download the rest of the missing files and frequently it will choke on trying to complete the process. Most McDonalds have WiFi but but are extremely slow and a dropped connection takes forever to get back on line. Sitting in the comfort in your home or RV with a high spee connection does not necessarily allpy to all of us. Please excuse any spelling errors as a soft keyboard at my age is quite difficult to master.
