Carefree Over The Door Awning (Freedom)

I have a Carefree OTD awning, Freedom model circa 2008. The motor jammed and I got a replacement. This is different from the original in many respects and the carefree instructions were reasonable but did not include any reference to the revised drive lugs for example, but the assembly was logical.
So having fitted it the motor would turn only one way, after much checking and double checking there is no problem with the power each press of the switch produces 13 volts correct polarity on the retract and reverse on the extend.
The factory keep telling me (twice now) to "finesse the limit switches" but I do not seem able to get the motor to extend.

A few questions for those out there with experience of this:
1. With my old motor (French manufacture) you could simply release the switch the motor would stop and you could then press the reverse direction and it would reverse, is that the case with the new motor (US or Chinese) (amazingly Carefree support cannot answer this simple question)
2. Has anyone replaced one of these motors and could they email me their experience.
3. The original installation had the cloth winding over the top of the drum, the factory and the instructions have it winding under the drum, what do others have?

It seems to me that the motor is faulty, I will again remove it today and test with a magnitude of limit switch settings to see if I can get this to reverse!!

My otd carefree would not move out because the fabric was not wrapped over the drum tight enough to hold the lever (limit switch)down. I had to manually push it into the drum until I could move the fabric over far enough to hold the switch in. My awning may be different than yours, the switch is a rocker top is out bottom is in.
