Mirrored Windows

One of our mirrored windows has a couple of small scratches on the outside, from a branch or some such I guess, interestingly nothing on the clear coat either side, is that stuff harder than glass? Am I correct in assuming that the mirror finish is on the inside and that I could use jewellers rouge to polish out the scratch. Or other suggestions appreciated?

Yes, the solar reflective coating is on the #2 surface counting #1 as the outdoors surface. (The inside surface of the outside pane). It is OK to polish with jewelers rouge. The professionals use cerium oxide. You may be able to find some at your local glass shop. Ask the glass dealer for his advice on methods and the tool to use. There is a cone shaped tool for your drill that works very well. Do not press too hard on your polishing wheel. If you cut through the thin tempered outer layer of the glass, it will shatter.
Rule of thumb: When you pull your finger nail over the scratch, if it has a tendency to stop, then the scratch is too deep to polish out. Leave it alone & live with it!

The coating may have been on the inside in 1998 but on my 09 Magna , it is on the outside surface of the glass. Do NOT polish with jewelers rouge as it will only scratch it more!! I had some sap on the glass and made the same mistake. The coating is on the outside and now is significantly scratched. I understand , the only answer is to change the glass !

You are right about that. We had a clear circle where an outside thermometer had been removed when we bought our coach. When we had the coach in for seal creep on several windows at Sun Coach Design in Hudson Fl, the replaced the glass. As I remember it was not that expensive.

This is a retraction of my previous post shown below regarding the mirror coating. I am embarrassed and I regret misinforming the forum. I stand corrected! Subsequent posts by Ron Baran, Vick Welsh and Kevin Wait are absolutely correct. Do NOT polish or use any abrasives on the mirrored glass windows as the soft mirror coating is on the outside! It is not resistant to abrasion.
I had a phone conversation with Kevin Waite and an E-mail response from Dave Root of Dave Root RV Glass Repair to absolutely verify this.
My advice would be correct only on clear, regular tint or dark tinted (28% light transmission) glass windows and windshields but NOT for mirror coated glass.
My assumption was based on the fact that modern residential windows have their heat reflecting Low-E (low emissivity) coating on the #2 surface for protection...But no excuse. I should have done more homework before I responded.
