New 7" Garmin coming

Yahoo Message Number: 81930
I received an email from Garmin that they have a new 7" Garmin coming out this fall that is for RV's and truckers. It is called the Dezl760lmt. It is suppose to be a lot better than the 560.

Barney,

Have you tried the 560? I did and found it not very satisfactory. It did not seem to understand the limitations I entered. For example it suggested a route through narrow country lanes across a moor when other competitive units suggested a main road option which was only 2/10th of a mile longer! After several equivalent bad choices I returned the unit as unsuitable for purpose. It may well avoid low bridges and other restrictions imposed on the vehicle dimensions but the algorithms to achieve an HGV route were unrealistic in light of the options available. I suspect the 760 will be same software but with a 7 inch screen.

Michael, since you returned yours, you have no way to know there have been multiple software updates and even more map updates. The only thing I was disappointed in was the small screen size available when we purchased ours. Now they are correcting that. I really like the Garmin line of products because they work so well with my Mac's. Plus I can load TOPO maps on all of them when I desire.

The last time I checked, ALL GPS companies had small print that said if effect, Do not use the GPS as your only means of navigation. Think they are trying to tell us to us our brains as well. Shucks paper maps have been proven wrong many times. Big difference with the map makers working with road lines on base maps as to actual what is on the ground, especially once one leaves the more traveled main roads. And some towns, Salt Lake City comes to mind, are always working on there freeways and it seems impossible to keep things current on GPS units.

Leonard, That's is good news I returned mine only in March. I also have a standard Garmin sat nav in the Kenwood 9280 and I understand your enthusiasm, that's why I went for the 560, but felt vulnerable with some of the basic errors or weakness. So now have a 7 inch Snooper which works well.

Hello All

Has anybody looked into the Rand-McNally unit that is touted to be programed especially for RVers

Hi Michael,

I haven't tried the Garmin 560 but I have tried a number of others. They all seem to have some downsides. I feel it's important to have a good basic idea where you are going and how to get there even with a GPS. I had the Rand McNally for a short time. Very difficult to get it to accept the addresses I was attempting to find. It also liked to send me on a wild goose chase occasionally. Didn't enjoy those at all. It would get you there eventually but not always the best route. Got rid of that one quickly!
I am now using the Magellan Roadmate (RV9165T-LM). Much easier to get it to accept addresses. Nice large screen and loud speaker. Also has Bluetooth and the Good Sam camp ground info. I find it works fairly well.
Garmin has always been my favorite GPS but they haven't come forward with a 7" screen and an RV database. Doesn't appear from the write ups I've seen on this new one that it will have any RV info either. Mainly for truckers. Too bad as they make very good units.

Did you get your problem solved with the Xantrex settings?
