tires for 03, 04, 05 Ovation

As I sit here at OMC waiting for my Onan to be returned from Cummins in Coburg Monday, I thought I

better tell you a tale of tires. When I went to Bob Dickmans Les Schwab a month ago to replace my XZ2

michelins that started out great the 4 of May but by the time I reached Bend Oregon on June 30th were

showing severe cracking. In the past when I bought these tires in 08 I was told 315's wouldn't fit in

place of the 12R Toyo's. Well HSL1 Continentals did with quite a bit of room to spare. Well yesterday I

observed another 04 Ovation in the shop here at OMC, but unlike mine it has a a Cat C-12 with 505 HP,

an Alison 4000 transmission and different rear axle and tags to handle the extra weight. And guess

what I observed. The rear axle is just enough longer and the tags so designed the 315's won't fit. Isn't that ironic. The coach with the heaviest rear end weight, with the larger engine, bigger radiators,

heavier rear-end , etc can't handle the larger tires. Now according to Michelin the 295 loaded has the

same cross sectional width as a 315. Hmmmm! But Because of the smaller diameter of the 295 its not

an issue as if .4 inch difference is going to make that much difference, but I guess so. So all of us with Ovations with ISL 400 can run 315, the men with the C-12 and 13 can't.
Well, I drove to Portland, then to Astoria, to Tillamook and back to Eugene when some more 3/8" water

hose failed and my Genset blew up. The 315 Continentals ride great at 112 lbs for the front and Tags

and 105 for the duals. They handle as well as the michelins on Oregon winding roads and are as

smooth on new asphalt and the interstate. But are just a hair noisier due to the more aggressive tread.

Seeing how my wheels are rated at 7250 lbs, I got out the Continental chart and interpolated the

pressure necessary for that weight and then added 5 lbs pressure as they recommend because I drive of
65 once in a while.

I stopped by Bob Dickman's to report to Paul what I though About the new tires. He was out, so I spoke

with Jon and gave the same report as above. He took me out and showed me SOB of coach with XZA2

315s that were 11 months old according to the code on the tire. The front two tires were already

showing cracks just like those that had appeared on my XZ2s!!!!!! That was an eye opener. I understand

that this becoming a common occurrence, though all the coaches I have checked with Michelins over the

past 2 months in my travels I have only seen one additional CC coach with cracking tires..Oh the 7 year

old 12R Goodyears looked like new. That really astounded me!

Our 12R22.5 XZE* Michelins are 2 years old, handle beautifully, ride nice, are pretty quiet and look like they were just installed except for some rounding of the edges on the tag axle. I run 115 in the front and 95 on the dual and tag and am well within the axle weight and ratings.

Thanks for the replies. It will be interesting to see what happens with time. Mine were 3 years and 10

months old. At 3 years and 8 months there wasn't one crack anywhere! I was very disappointed to say

the least. I thought $4950 was a chunk at the time. $5800 with $1400 buy back was another chunk!

X3 on Lee and Bob. Got the XZE* for the same price as the XZE. Parkhouse said it had a bit more sidewall protection. Figured with me coming out of a Bounder T28 and learning to navigate with the CC, that I'd probably clip a few things as I was learning (I did, a few times, but not too bad. Though I've been asked to never drive in Itally again - yeah, you see, I hit this old tower thing, and it kind of leans some now:)!) (Sorry, I thought it was funny... DW is not here to set me straight!).

I 2 1/2 years on them, but only 10K - pleased so far:)!
Best bet, is to go with round tires. The square ones are good for parking on hills - but dang the ride rough!!!

The 315 Continental HSL1 does fit all the way around on a 2003 Magna Resort with 505 Cat C-12. I am surprised that they don't on the Intrigue Ovation.

I rally like the tires after 5K miles.

I am about to replace 5 tires with Michelins and the dealer suggested that I should consider using "Tirelife" inside the tires. does anyone in the group have any experience with that product?
