Satellite TV through Shore Connection

Yahoo Message Number: 82735
This problem has plagued me for a long time and I've decided to attack it. I have the original television installation in the coach and generally use the KVH roof mounted dish to receive Dish Network satellites 110 and 119. Occasionally, our signal is blocked by trees, so I set up a tripod mounted DP Twin satellite dish. What I don't understand is that I get a perfect signal from both satellites when running the signal cable through the driver's window. However, when I attach the signal cable to the jack in the wet bay, the receiver only recognizes the 119 satellite. In fact, on the Install Summary Screen, the receiver does not even recognize the DP Twin dish and only states: Installed Device: Unknown. According to the wiring diagram MHI/MHL Video RF Connections that came with the coach, the Shore Coax Cable goes to a Coax Combiner/Splitter, Reversable (1 in/2 out). My question is whether this splitter could be the problem, and if not where I should look. My guess is that some of the receiver's power to the dual LNB is being shed through the splitter or some other internal wiring within the coach. If this is the case, what would I need to do or modify to get a signal from multiple satellites through the shore connection to the electronics cabinet above the driver's seat. Thanks in advance for your help!

Rick, I'm not any expert, but make sure you have your Air Antenna Amplifier "off" no green light "on".

Rick,

I could be wrong but I don't think that connection in the wet bay go to the satellite receiver Dish Network or Directv. It is for a cable type of connection thru the switch box to the TV.
At times I also use my tripod dish that goes to an A/B switch that I installed and run that cable thru my drivers window. Not an option I like but works.
If someone knows how to use that wet bay connection for a satellite connection I would also like to know so I can stop running the cable thru the window.

I found a different solution. I opened the trim on the inside of the windshield frame, drilled a hole to fit an RG barrel connector, and ran an RG 6 cable from the connector to the satellite equipment.
Now I can simply connect the outside cable to the connector and I am ready to go.

Had to do a little fishing to get the new cable in place, but not bad.

Good idea Bob. I don't like to drill holes in the coach but your way is better than me just running the cable thru the window.

Rick,

Here is another solution. In the third pass side bay there is a connection for an outside TV. If you don't plan to have an outside TV pull the Wingard switch box, disconnect that outbound feed and reconnect it to an A/B switch as B input. Then connect your dome to the A input. The A/B output would then go to the Wingard where you disconnected the dome input. Plug your outside dish to the bay input, select B and you are home free. I do this exact thing except the bay input is for a dish antenna on the roof of my coach barn.

Thanks Lyle,

That's an awesome idea! I believe I'll try it. I still wonder how one satellite feed is lost when using the existing shore connection though.

I encountered this years ago with a fifth wheel trailer. An electronics vender at Quartzite said the powered antenna switch interferes with the signal to the receiver and that I would need to run a separate cable for the Sat Receiver.
I hope this explains the problem you are having with the cable feed.

I set mine up to use a portable satellite connection through the cable connection in plumping bay. I found the procedure through RV.net where some wire connections behind the batwing booster had to be switched around, plus an a/b switch. When I find the procedure, I'll pass I on. It can be done.

I do not have your dual Lnb set up or Dish TV. However, I do watch my portable antenna through the rear coax hook up on rare occasions.

I needed two A/B switches to accomplish the deed.
The first sends the signal either to the dedicated A/B switch for the Satellite receiver and one to the "Cable" tv connection on my TV Source switch box.
The second A/B switch allows selection of either the roof sat antenna or the rear sat antenna to feed signal to the Sat Receiver.
The outbound signal then goes to the Satellite connection on my TV switching box.
So, in my case I can direct the rear signal to the Sat Receiver by switching both A/B switches to B.

If you haven't solved the problem, yes it could be the splitter, multiple LNB's have different frequency ranges, most old-style splitters can't pass through the high frequency ranges of the newer multi-LNB satellite dishes. Any amps inline etc. could have the same problem.
Find a high-bandwidth splitter, a 2 or 2.4 or 2.5 GHz splitter, if it's not so marked then it isn't. Should be

Here's an example:
