I Want to Buy a 2002 32 ft Country Coach Intrigue

Yahoo Message Number: 82837
Hi All:

Hopefully This post is ok here.

I've been looking at Country Coach coaches for a while and am ready to buy one if I can find what I'm looking for.
Hopefully someone here might know of a coach that would work for me.
I'm only looking for coaches that are in great condition, and has been well taken care of. Sheltered, well maintained. I'm not looking for a "fixer upper".
I'm willing to pay a top price for one that I like. I understand these are hard to locate, I've been able to find several that have 2 slides, but that is not what I want.
Here is what I would really like to locate.
2002 Country Coach Intrigue: ( Allure would work also) * 32ft long (must be this length - not insterested in any longer lengths) * 1 slide (living area)

* Girard Automatic Awning ( not required) * Does not have the large Plexiglass shield on the front (if its there, not a big deal) * Less than 100k miles (very flexible on the mileage) * the bigger the motor the better (400hp would be great) * Updated Electronics - HD Tv's, In Motion Satelitte dish. (not required) * Washer/Dryer combo installed. ( not required) * As many factory installed options as possible

So thats my wish list.

If anyone knows of a coach like this I would really appreciate it if you would let me know.
My wife and I would be very grateful, and be more than happy to make sure you get at least a really nice Dinner out of it.
We've been RV'ers for years both Fulltime and weekend warrior. We currently have a Short 2011 Itasca A Class gasser. Great motorhome. We've had Safari DP's in the past, and decided to look for an older, shorter CC.
Thanks again for taking the time to read thru this. Hopefully someone might know of one thats for sale.
You can reply here, or contact me directly.
Thanks,

Glenn Miller

Glen Good luck on your search. I can't help you as I don't know of any, but I am interested in why only 1 slide. With respect to slides, most people want as many as they can get , or none at all ! Just wondering ?

Right now there is a 2000 32ft. Intrigue Garnet for sale on E-bay. I don't think it has a slideout which might be a good thing. Barrie Boas 94 Concept 5111

We have a 2004 33' Country Coach Allure with 2 slides (living-dining and one in bedroom) and absolutely love the floor plan. We full time in it. In case you don't find the 32' one slide, this model might be an alternative. (ours is NOT for sale! LOL).

Thanks for the response. This could be an option as well. Could you point me at a floor plan for this model? I'll try to search for it online as well.

Thanks. I did take a look at this one, and spoke to the owner as well. It seems to be a really nice coach.
I'm really holding out for a slide unit. As probally most people here already know, I don't really decide anything, I just carry out the wife's orders. It's just much easier that way. LOL

Thanks for the support in my quest. I totally agree that some/most people would want lots of slides.

As for only wanting 1 slide, here's why. Maybe I'm wrong ..

2 slides units have a slide on the curb side (passenger side).

1. When the slide is in, it is behind the passenger seat, so it restricts the passesnger's position like reclining, swiviel, etc.

2. It affects the outside patio area. And is real close to the entrance door.

3. From what I have seen. If that slide is there, the coach cannot have a Girard automatic awning installed - because there is not enough room over the slide. I've only seen automatic awnings on coaches that do not have the curb side slide. Eventually I want to have an automatic awning installed if the coach does not already have one on it.

4. All 2 slide units that I have looked at only offer the "J" sofa. The floor plan does not have the small recliner, and dining table and chairs. This is something we really want.

I know these may be weird reasons to not want a slide. But it's something that we have thought about for a while.

Thanks,
Glenn

We have a Girard automatic awning on our 4 slide unit, so it must be able to be done.
The passenger seat can fully recline and swivel, although we normally don't swivel it completely around unless we're parked for several days/ weeks.

In the 33' Allure with 2 slides, both slides are on the driver's side, so you don't have the curb side slide problem.

This is dang close to our 04 Allure too... Our's is the 40" High Cascade model.

-Same basic paint scheme

-We have the dining chairs with cabinet storage below and behind it, vs the booth.
-We also of course have 7 - 8' more room for a longer galley, bathroom, etc.
-And, I want to point out, some stole the tag off of this rig:)! -We add a second cargo tray basement storage too.

A few pluses and minus items to reflect on: -Plus, the galley is in the Non Slide. So, higher cabinent spaces for some added storage. And, less 'moving items' such as plumbing and propane lines.
-Minus, the Allure did not pick up the Slide Out Generator, in this era.. (I believe to segregate it more from the Intrigue, as IMO in 2004 era, the Allure and Intrigue could easilly overlap depending on options at purchase. Another differnce, is the Intrigue had the ISL400 vs ISL370 (as mentioned, same torque, and not much real world differences between these engines), and also I think this year also had the Big Cat option available too...)
One other tip. I found out just recently, my 2004 model had a 2003 ISL370 CAPS engine. I was told it was a Common Rail engine, by I believe honest mistake. If looking now, I would give a strong nudge to at least getting a unit with the Common Rail engine. However, if all else is a solid 'go' on a coach with the CAPS, I would still purchase it and then also factor a budget to include extended warranty. (Sure, thousands of CAPS ISL's and ISC's are running all over this country without a problem. But that does not change the higher odds of having an expensive problem with a CAPS engine vs Common Rail engine. That of course is my opinion only, and may not match others:)!)
I like the 36' and under CC's of this era, when we come off the road from extensive traveling in the future (have not started yet:)!) - I sure would consider the 36' and under CC's, Foretravels, and Alpines for a 'around the local area' RV.... We went with the 40', for added stability of the Tag, and extra CCC that the tag provided. My wife likes me now, and I want to keep it that way - so the extra feet will help in that area too... We had not space constraints, and I felt that the way we would use the rig, we would possibly be hampered by the extra feet perhaps 5% or less of the time.... So far, 2 1/2 years - never a problem with the extra feet...

Best of luck on your search, have fun, Smitty

Hi Glen,

As mentioned by others, many of the two slide CC's are on the Driver's side only. That extra space while FT'ing, is nice to have.
Also, many of the three slides CC's, are also worth looking at if within your budget range. As they usually add two slides to the rear bedroom area. (The Patio space usage, and easier access to basements, is what I would not want a slide on the front passenger side. Though many, many people are very happy with this arangement, willing to give up the easier access to basements for more room in side... This is to each their own kind of thing:)!)

The other factor that I considered is that each slide both adds: -Weight

-More mechanical things to go wrong -Eat up usable inside cabient space (top cabinets are shorter within slides, and the actyuall 'slide walls' eats up 4-6" (going off of menory, so could be off on this) available cabinet space -Last factor - the more cut outs you have for slides, the less shell strength you have in the overall rig...
Again, best of luck on your search. It's your money, and how you care to use an RV that is what is important... So, think it thru - and do what you want with your $$:)!

Thanks for sending over the link. This is a really great floor plan. I do like the 2 slides on the same side. I bet you do really enjoy your coach.
One of my reasons for trying to stay in the 32 ft range is because of some parking and driveway problems I face. My driveway is basically up a mountain, and the area I have to park and turn around is limited.
I have real concerns about not being able to get a longer coach up my driveway. Which is a must for me.
We had a 2001 38' Safari Zanabar DP , and it would not work. That's basically why we sold it.
If it's not to much to ask of you. Would you mind telling me how long your wheelbase is on your 33' coach? And how much overhang there is from the center of your rear wheels to the back of the coach? I've looked around the web but can't seem to find anything about this.

Thanks again for all your great info and help.

Thanks,
Glenn

Hi Smitty:

Thanks for the comments, and encouragement. All of these are very valid points. I've never been a real big slide fan. I've faced some of the issues you mention first hand. For us it's more about having a floor plan that can basically be used without ever opening a slide, but having the extra space when we do park it for a few days or weeks.
I have been looking at other floor plans and configurations to see if they could work for what we are looking for. I'm sure there are some out there that I have not seen at this point.
I've had several coaches in the past - some big some small - all have their advantages and disadvantages. We were fulltimers for a few years, about 10-12 years ago, and did have a big DP coach with lots of slides. It was great. Tons of room.
But we decided to get off the road, and come back home to play with our other toys that we like. :)
We travel very light now. No toad. Over the past few years I've bought a few short motorhomes, and I just luv 'em. They suite our RV style perfectly, at least for now. We spend alot of time driving, and staying at Walmart. The down side is handling and ride - I really miss that. So, that's why we're now trying to find a short DP. More toys :)
This year I have probally looked at 30 or 40 DP motorhomes, both old and new. It's kind of a hobby of mine. We've drove most of them. The tiffin breeze, Thor Plazzo? , new Fleetwood 33 ft, Older models like Tiffin, Winnebago, Newmar, Beaver, Monaco, Holiday Rambler - basically anything that I could find that was around the 32ft length.
But then I started doing some research on the Country Coach models, and fell in love ... lol . The wild thing is that I have never actually driven one. Maybe my expections of a CC are to high. I hope not.
I just like the way the Country Coach was built. IFS, big horse power, side mounted raditor, lots of weight, huge tires, big storage, big tanks, the list just keeps growing. I just need all this cool stuff in a 32ft package that I can get up my steep driveway. LOL

Thanks,
Glenn

Hi Glen

I attached a 2002 country coach brochure for the Allure. It lists all specs, etc. I also attached a picture of my 2002 Allure 32ft crescent model.
We might consider selling.

You may not be familiar with the option of raising your coach while driving to clear obstacles (railroad tracks, etc) or to negotiate steep driveways. There is a way to bypass the normal ride height setting to do this. Many on this forum have modified there coach to take advantage of this added maneuverability. My dad had a steep driveway that I had a hard time entering until I modified the coach to allow me to raise it and easily negotiate the driveway.

Thanks Larry.

I have seen a button on the level controller thats says "Raise" (i think), but have not heard of a modification. Is the mod a big deal? How much are you able to raise your coach? This sounds like a great option.

Thanks,
Glenn

You have to modify the coach yourself to allow that raise button to raise and hold the coach while driving. Without a simple modification, that button will raise the coach with the engine running, but as soon as you put the tranny in drive, the travel mode takes over and wants to seek the ride height set for traveling. To bypass this many have installed a switch connected to the 7.5 travel mode fuse to turn it off temporarily. Note, you can't go much faster than walking speed in this configuration because of the angle placed on the drive shaft. The coach will raise to its maximum height.

Larry,

You are correct as long as the coach has the older style HWH Controller. Around 2004 HWH changed to the digital controller and the "Raise" button latches in when you press it thus eliminating the problem and the need for a modification. The way to tell, if I remember, is that the newer style control panel has a Travel Mode button while the older style does not. Also the older style controller used a bubble level to determine level. It was usually located above the ceiling in one of the bays. The newer controller box is usually located in the bay under the drivers side window but not always. It levels with digital sensors.
One caution with your modification or the newer type digital controller is that either will continue to raise the coach all the way to the top and in some coaches exert a lot of pressure on the shocks. In this condition it doesn't take much lateral motion of the coach to break the shocks. Done that. In my coach the shocks are shorter than the air bag travel. I don't know about all the other years and models. Now when I have to clear something I have the wife keep an eye under the coach and tell me the minute I have cleared the object. Then I immediately hit the Travel Mode button in order to stop any further raise than necessary.

Glenn,

On my 2002 Allure NO modification is required. All I have to do is manually raise the coach using the "Raise" or arrow buttons, then simply hold the "Air" button while moving the coach - it helps if someone else holds the button while you drive:-).
I occasionally do this after leveling the coach and then decide to move it a few feet forward or backward on the site. Holding the "Air" button keeps the controller from switching to travel mode and holds the current air bag levels.

Newer HWH air leveling systems apparently don't operate this way.

There's a travel indicator light, but no travel button on my panel. I believe my system is a Model 500. Here's a link to the operators manual:

Our 33' Coach is built on Dynomax chassis 50 degree turning radius. We can turn around where others can't. The wheelbase is 207" not sure about the rear overhang. Here's one like ours with a 400HP Cummins ISL. (We have a 370HP)
