Dual Tire Spacing

Yahoo Message Number: 83945
I want to open another can of worms about tires. My Intrigue came with size 12R22.5 tires and that's what I've used for the past two tire sets. In searching for my next set of tires the size 315/80R/22.5 offerings are more tempting than the 12R22.5. But ... Minimum Dual Spacing for the 12R22.5 is 13.5 inch and Minimum Dual Spacing for the 315/80R/22.5 is 13.8 to 13.9 inch. That's a difference of 0.3 to 0.4 inch between spacing requirements.
I've gotten mixed signals when asking tire shops including Les Schwab (Bob Dickman) and wanted to know if any of you whose original tires were 12R have migrated to 315 and what has been your experience? Maybe the real question is how does one measure the actual wheel spacing on an existing coach?
My rims are 8.25 inch. Some tires specify 8.25 or 9.00 but others just specify 9.00. Does that mean that the 12R22.5 that calls for 9.00 won't fit on my 8.25 rims? The coach came with 12R22.5!
Lots of questions, but it's a serious matter. Thanks for any help and I don't mean to start any online wars.

Hi Steve, Our 2002 Intrigue, #11329 came with 12R22.5. When checking size in a replacement tire (in the P/metric charts) the only close choice was 315/80R22.5. The areas of concern were: gear ratio/speedometer accuracy/fuel mileage/engine torque operation. The height/circumference was closest with 315/80R/22.5. After much towel wringing I decided on 6 Michelin's. 18,000 miles and 12 months later there have been no issues with extra heat, sidewall touching, or rock accumulation between the tires, this includes a trip to Alaska and a lot of gravel roads. I monitor temp. and pressure continuously with SmarTire....Skip

Steve, earlier this year after much reseach, I replaced the Toyo 12R22.5 tires on my 2000 Allure with Michelin XZA2 315/80R 22.5. I've got approximately 5000 miles on them with extreme satisfaction with the performance.

Thanks for the encouraging replies from Skip and Charles for relating that they have successfully switched from 12R22.5 tires to 315/80R/22.5 tires with no problems related to dual tire spacing even though the 315s are just a tad wider than the 12Rs. Has anyone had any bad experiences in doing this??
Back to one of my original questions ... how can one measure the actual wheel spacing on a coach to know what that measurement is??

Thanks, Steve (2002 Intrigue 36-ft #11382)

Steve,

I bought tires in July and intended to put 315's all around. The dealer was skeptical that they would work on the duals but agreed to mount them to see the result. After he mounted two of the tires he mated the wheels as they would be on the coach. I don't remember the exact spacing but we both agreed that it was inadequate (this was without the weight of the coach on the tires which would only have decreased the spacing on the bottom) and instead installed R12's on the rear duals and 315's on the front. It was a factory Michelin dealer (TCI)that I was using. They also had questions on whether they should mount the 315's on 8.25" rims. That was a non-issue when we went back to the R12's on those rims and installed the 315's on the front 9" rims.

Just my experience with my coach.

Steve,

I have the 315X80 22.5 Continental HSL1 Coach tires on my Magna which came with 8.25 inch rims and Toyo 12R22.5. I was unaware that any 12R22.5 tire required 9.0 inch rims. The Michelin 315X80s require 9.0 inch. The Conti is the only tire of its' size that I know of that supports 8.25 inch rims.
I have put almost 10,000 miles on the Continentals since purchase from Bob Dickman (on their recommendation) in JC.

It is a very expensive tire but I like it.

Good luck
