Age old mileage question

Yahoo Message Number: 84622
What are Magna and Affinity owners with the Cat C13 getting for fuel mileage? What about the Cummins 600 ? Does towing a car in a trailer behind change the mileage at all ? Does winter blend diesel effect your mileage?
We just did a trip from Chicago to Denver fighting a fierce headwind and going 70mph and averaged 6.3.

I average between 6.1 and 6.8 . We full time so are pretty much running at gvwr 52,000 plus a Honda element with kayaks on the roof. I usually set the cruise at 59 mph when I can.

My last trip across the country (7,300 miles) resulted in about
6.7mpg with cruise usually set at 62mph. Silverleaf read 8.3, but it
also read substantially further than the 7,300 on the speedo. The silverleaf is off, but I'm told that's not uncommon.

Eat your hearts out......'04 Inspire, 350 Cummins towing Ford Flex. 8.4 average over the past 35,000 miles. Actual, not Silverleaf although it is very close. Cruise at 58 and have removed rear flap.

We are jealous, George! Our 06 Inspire 40' long towing a Buick Enclave gets 7, and that's about the highest! We do drive a tad faster though and have also removed rear flap.

Thanks!

Any questions? I am a firm believer in cruise control. Also am painfully slow from standing starts. Then again, I'm 75 years old and not in a hurry to get anywhere.

Looks to me as if driving in a more sane manner would be very helpful for us to gain some mpg. However, we are full time workers, and we usually have to get from point A to point B in a set amount of time. Looking forward though to the time when we can take it a lot easier! Thanks, George.

On my trip to Oregon last year, we averaged right 7.9 getting there from El paso going up thru the central valley and then HWY 1`to I 5, and about 8.4 from Oregon down I 5 to the Bay Area across the Sierras, the 13 or 14 high passes in Nevada across Utah, through Colorado to Durango and home. Which proves replacing or repairing the charge air cooler can make quite a difference. We averaged over 9 from Durango to El Paso, but we dropped close to 3,000 ft over 492 miles. Mary,

If you stop to think about it, 70 vs 58 is 12 MPH. Over an eight hour day, that amounts to under 100 miles. So you get there a little earleir and it cost an extra $10 to do it.

George. I agree with you 100%. Perhaps it's a habit we have of hurrying along. I think a lot of folks here have it figured out to mosey along - if that means driving under 65 mph!!. We'd also love to take non-freeway roads because there is so much more to see. Thanks for your help! Would love to meet you and many others we feel as if we've gotten "to know" a little bit with the wonderful help and advice and information we've benefited from here.

Dave Glen, I believe the Silverleaf gets its data from the Engine ECM. Do you have CAT or Cummins? On my boat I have CATs and the fuel flow data is rubbish compared to my friend who has Cummins. The fuel flow is based on a flow/power curve stored the ECM and is a calculated guess, not a proper flow and return calculation. On my Allure I have a Cummins and mpg works reasonably accurate.
