Recovering / towing coach

Yahoo Message Number: 84822
All - especially those who have had their coaches 'recovered' at some time,

2005 allure 430 - Hood River - tri-axle
I have located three different accessible air system / pneumatic access 'points'
under the front - driver's side - appears to access the parking brake system and enable the recovery truck to 'release' the parking brakes
driver's side in the propane bay - 2 points - one appears to access the service / foot brake system - the other appears to access the front air suspension system
engine compartment - 2 points - one accesses the service / foot brake system - the other appears to access the rear suspension system
It would appear therefore then when the coach is being towed / recovered there is a need to connect to (1) front (parking brake) - (2) propane bay (front suspension) and (3) engine compartment (rear suspension) ?? - in order to release the brakes and allow the air suspension to be effective / operate when under tow ??
Is this the case ?? - or is there another single point somewhere in the pneumatic system into which the recovery guys can 'tap' to pressurize the entire system (as if the engine were operating) ??
What has happened to others when their coaches have been recovered / towed ??
(I cannot locate any such connection on the schematics - subject of another posting)

Thank you in anticipation

On our Allure I installed a Pipe Tee and a Air Connector Fee Male to the Air Horn suppley line will work just fine. Ken 99 Allure 30356

Ian,

My understanding is the front connection is all you need to worry about when towing. This connection provides air to the air tanks, front and rear. It provides air pressure to release the parking brake and also keeps the air bags inflated correctly. That's all you need for towing.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I think you need to remove the drive shaft before towing it on the hook. I've not been towed yet so I'm speaking without experience.

Scott,

Yes, you are correct. The discussion was regarding air connections for towing so I didn't mention the drive shaft. Thanks for keeping me straight.

I had my coach towed just outside Cleveland, OH. and they did remove the drive shaft.

I believe they are all connected. When I was towed the operator tapped into the engine compartment connection.

There was a great forum on towing a motor home at the Indianapolis FMCA rally this summer. According to the speaker, either the drive shaft or the half axles will have to be removed before towing the motor home. If you have the choice when pulling off the road, try to leave about 5 feet of space on either side of the motor home in case the half axles have to be pulled.
The forum speaker wrote an article in the June, 2011, FMCA magazine on what to expect and what you need to know when having your motor home towed. Members of FMCA can see the article online; it is titled "Beating the Breakdown Blues".

When My Engine air compressor faild in the storage yard here in Yuma, Coach Net sent out a big rig from Parker. The driver was going remove the driveshaft and I said no as the coach has air bags.I Did not want him under the COACH!!! He then Filled the air tanks Via the air feed line to Air Horn from his trucks service air he supplyed fittings for this! After filling the Tanks he Followed me to Rush Truck center here in Yuma. All turned out except the 2100.00 bill to replace the Air Compressor! I now can run my Electric Air Compressor 120 volts 125 psi. if the Engine Compressor fails again to fill the Coach Air tanks to move the Coach to the nearest Shop But Remember this air in not clean or dryed. But another Failure may not in this lifetime! Ken 99 Allure 30356.

Thank you to all who have replied thus far

Dan - when I last charged through the two connections in the engine bay I was only able to rlelease the service / foot brake and raise the rear suspension - will revisit when coach out of storage
Barney - when I last charged through the front connection alone - I released the parking brake but it didn't appear to affect the suspension(s) - will revisit / try again when coach comes out of winter storage
Ken - I am thinking that this is more along the lines of what I might have to do in order to replicate the air compressor supply in order to allow all the systems to function (as if supplied by the compressor)

Further suggestions / experiences appreciated

Kevin W has again come up trumps with info about buying the pneumatic schematics from CC - thanks Kevin
Will post more when I have investigated a single replacement air feed further

When you are towed there is only the need to raise the rear and release the brakes. Maybe that is why the tow operator connected his truck to the engine compartment connection.
