Amish Upgrade

This was on another site about the change a person made on his Norcold...

Quote....I had our one year old Norcold cooling unit replaced with an Amish unit yesterday. $1250 with two new fans. Cost for the install was $450. We had it installed at Texoma RV in Denison, Texas. They have done several. I didn't add a fire extinguisher. They did a great job. Some say you can do it yourself but I don't recommend it. They did it while I waited.

Just letting people know.

The Amish is much louder than the Norcold. Mine failed in June 2013.

When I had mine changed the Amish unit did not come with fans. The tech just remounted the original fans on the new unit. I didn't notice any change in the noise level.
BTW Jock why did you change yours when it isn't scheduled for failure until June of 2013. I know it was a typo but it struck me funny. Maybe Norcold does have a failure schedule. (BG)

I just ordered my Amish kit yesterday for shipping to Chris Snyder in Tucson. He has installed several of these and says the 2 new fans make the unit louder so he disconnects one of them. Cooling is still much better and faster with the one fan.

We're going to keep Chris Snyder busy, he is installing ours in Tucson on Tuesday! I ordered ours with just one fan due to the noise issues but had them add the baffle near the top to direct the airflow to the right place.

I just had my unit changed a couple of weeks ago and glad I did. The top half of the insulation was completely burnt thru.

A few of my thoughts:

Buy the unit from David Forte at www.rvcoolingunit.com. The main reason is the price is good and David is more than willing to answer you questions. He wants the job done right. He has a lot of information on his website and a you -tube vidio of the install. He will email you additional instructions if necessary. HE IS KEY.
The two fans were added as most install jobs are not baffled right. Look at the instructions for the original install from Norcold.
The baffle is necessary to direct ALL of the air thru the fins. They are not to remove the heat. I put one fan on a switch in case the summer heat is too much for one fan.
My fans turned on and off too quickly. Forte sent me a relay to make the fans run longer before shutting off. Ask Forte about putting this on in the beginning.

It is important to have the new install glued and foamed correctly. If not done right the heat will be greater. Follow Forte's instructions.

Bill,

Not that it is a big deal but I believe that his name is David Force but I could be wrong. He is or was the sole distributor for the Amish unit. Maybe that has changed since I did mine in Dec of 2010. You are correct that he is a nice guy and very helpful with any problems.
