Norcold -fires, upgrades, etc.

Yahoo Message Number: 85255
After reading numerous posts on this forum regarding the defective Norcold refrigerator issues (including many destroyed coaches), we decided to do the Amish upgrade sold through Pines RV Refrigeration. Since we bought the coach in Tucson from Beaudry RV, we have used Chris Snyder for service issues while he was at Beaudry, and since Beaudry closed he has offered mobile RV services in Tucson.
I called Chris and he had me order the unit from David Force who contacted Pines RV and had the unit shipped to Chris Snyder in Tucson. We drove over to Tucson yesterday and Chris and team installed it today. The brochure that comes with the unit says "this is an easy DO-IT-YOURSELF project. Unless you have at least (3) 20-year-old football players to help, don't believe it! Getting this unit removed, upgraded and re-installed is a lot more project than I would attempt.
After viewing the condition of the pipes in the old unit, we were stunned about how burned and black everything was. There has been major heat behind this unit, and we are fortunate that our coach did not burn at some point. The "recall" that was done 2 years ago in Yuma does only one thing. It shuts down the unit (forever) if the internal pipe temperature exceeds 780 degrees.
The Amish unit comes with 2 fans but Chris removed one of them because it is not needed and is fairly noisy. We turned it on a couple of hours ago and it is quiet and cooling nicely. We had considered going with a new residential unit but that would require inverter and battery upgrades and additional modifications.

We will sleep well tonight!

What was your cost for the conversion kit, and for the install? I am in the Mesa area and may consider doing the same with Chris. Thanks in advance.

The kit from Pines RV was $1255 including shipping. Your install will vary, depending on your coach, etc. Chris did a great job for me at a reasonable price, but he is very busy this time of year.

The kit was $1255. The install with Chris will vary, Mine was less than 5 hours. Much cheaper than the alternatives.
