Allison 6 Speed Transmission Question

Does anyone have issues with there Allison transmission getting hot when sitting at a stop light when in gear? Or when trying to park the coach moving back and forth in short stop and go situations?
I took our coach to an Allison repair shop in Yakima WA and they said it was the gauge and put a new one in. They also changed the fluid and filters and said we were good to go. But it still does the same thing although now it has not got into the red only the yellow but I always stop and put it into nuetral and let it cool off and then shut it off... Has anyone had this issue and if so what did you have to do to fix it?

Ken, did Allison do a diagnostics of specific Fault Codes from your Selector Touch Pad? If so they should have advised you of what the Faults revealed?

Ken,

I think this is an issue with a lot of coaches. Mine does the same thing and I a pay special attention in stop and go traffic. I always put coach into neutral when at stop lights. I have been told the sending unit is in the worst possible position on the transmission so it records the temp at the hottest possible place.

I had an 06 Inspire which did the very same thing.....
went to several shops for a solution, nothing helped until I went to a trucking place - they adjusted the fan and had it set to be on high all the time, not in increments. jan

CC put the sensor for the transmission at the exit where the fluid is being pumped to the radiator and not in the pan where it belongs. Therefore the readings are at the highest and not the average of the transmission. So like you when I am parked for than a minute or in stop and go traffic I place the transmission in neutral. I believe the folks with Silver leaf get their readings from the pan thru the transmission ECM so don't have to worry. I know I shouldn't, and had it demonstrated to me a Allison that when the gauge said 300 the transmission temps were still safe.

Ken,

I have had the same experiences... I felt better when I went to Silver Leaf dashboard with gave me more accurate transmission temp. readings. Still go to neutral for the long traffic idles.
I seem remember one of the Allison manuals saying not to idle in gear more than 6 minutes, but cant find the reference at the moment.

I believe most Inspire owners (around 05) are having the same problem.
I also believe your Allison dealer was correct when he said you were good to go, however he probably sold you a gauge that you didn't need. What Jock said about the sending unit in the worst possible place is the problem.
Still, nobody wants to look at a temp gauge starting to soar. What helped me was getting a Silverleaf unit which confirmed that at stops the transmission was not getting hotter, but was actually starting to cool slightly.

All they told me was that the gauge was faulty and that the trans was fine and that it needed service of which they did. It cost $1600 + dollars and all I can say is that it was an expensive guage.

I've been to seminars on this question in the past. It seems that Country Coach put the sending unit for the temp on the return line from the torque convertor which shows high heat after doing the work while idling. I was told not to worry unless you see temps going over 275 or higher. That's why we have Transynd fluid in these units. Supposedly this fluid will take temps up to 300 degrees and not be burnt.
Having said that, I shift to neutral when I see things getting over 250 and have also put a switch in that allows me to turn on the hydraulic fan whenever I want.
