Auto levelling

We've just pulled into a park with 'bad' concrete pads. Way out of level. Down in the back mostly. When I pulled up I pushed the dump button and dropped the motorhome thinking that once I pushed the auto button the motorhome would level by lifting the rear. No. The auto system wanted to bring the whole darn motorhome back to ride height and then start to level. Resulting in the back being high enough to do a full service. Well not quite but you get the picture. So I dumped again. Again the auto system wanted to start from ride height. So I dumped again and leveled manually.
Question - Is this 'normal'? Shouldn't auto level from a full dump of air work? This is the method I've always used. ie dump then auto level. Or is it's base point always from ride height. Or has something changed? I've never had this problem before.

Bruce, I don't dump all of the air unless I am on a pretty level site and sometimes I don't even do that. It depends on how long we are going to be sitting there. I have found that if the site is pretty unlevel, it is best to pull in at ride height, hit the level button and let the HWH computer take over from there.
I have found that if I do a full dump on an unlevel site and then try to level, mine acts just like yours.

My HWH Manual says...level first, then dump the air. Works better and faster, while still not needing a ladder to climb in, or over extending rear shocks if needed.

Bruce... I am not sure if the air leveling functions differently on an 01 Intrigue than on newer coaches like my HWH 2000, but in rereading the HWH Manual, it really only talks about using DUMP in conjunction with manual leveling, so my guess is that if you go into AUTO mode it will start from ride height, but others may correct me on this. Personally I just use the AUTO mode and my system will dump from one end and raise the other (or side to side) as needed to reach level. The manual also discusses EXCESS SLOPE but doesn't really say what to do if the system determines there is too much slope to achieve level.
EXCESS SLOPE was actually the point of my previous post on leveling blocks which generated very little discussion, surprisingly. As I said, we were in a Thousand Trails campground recently and there wasn't a level spot in the entire park... and probably half of them had 'EXCESS SLOPE'. Hence I began working on a leveling block arrangement and used one member's suggestion for the horse stall pads as a base and then built on it with Camping World Lego style leveling blocks. I don't think there is much choice, as there is a definite limit to the amount of lift or drop the system can generate. I think I read somewhere there is a 12" total range but oddly enough it doesn't state this in the manual... and I checked the CC manual as well. If anyone has the documentation on this I would be interested to confirm the 12" number.
And if anyone has a tip on a electronic device which one can use to determine the amount of drop from one point on the ground to another, I think that would be a useful device to have when one suspects "EXCESS SLOPE". By the way, I had occasion to call HWH once and found them very helpful on the phone. And I put the HWH2000 manual here: http://www. Wind-seeker.com/tech/HWH2000_OM.pdf This is the short one... I have a much longer one which deals with the slide rooms, but this shorter one has the same info for leveling.

Picturing what the manual says, to me, does not make sense. If the pad, dirt or grass your parking on is not level and you level it, fine that should work. But once you dump the air, the coach is going to be at the same unlevelness as what you are parking on. I usually dump the air and then have the HWH level the coach. On occassion we do need to put out an extra entry step for us short legged people.

I like my entry steps as close to the ground as possible so this is where I start. I lower my front as far as possible and then level side to side. I then adjust the rear to level. I use a level bubble on the counter to determine what is level. My auto feature never seems to check out with the bubble. I find the bath room door never stays where I put it and either swings open or shut when I use the auto level feature but does not move when I use the bubble level. If I get the suspension as low as possible in the front it seems more stable and does not bounce as much when walking in the coach as when I level from ride height. If I have to raise the front a little I do but my goal is steps as close to the ground as possible and I really do not worry about the rear height.

When I push my auto level button the coach automatically first dumps all the suspension air, the coach drops about four inches then the auto leveling begins. All seems to work well! RJ

Thanks everyone. If I hit auto then everything will level just fine. But I don't like the back being up so high. (Relative to the ground). If I hit dump after leveling in auto I'm back to square one. Siting on the ground not level.
I can hit auto. Level. Then go to manual and let the front down and the back a bit. But with the HWH still in auto/check mode up it goes again!! Sigh.

But we're ok. If it wasn't for the auto mode I would be happy being 'almost' level. The guy in front of me with jacks has all four rears off the ground. No thanks.
The cold nights also become a problem with the colder air in the bags compressing it bit.
Again thanks. I think we are looking for a perfect solution that doesn't exist. Near enough will have to do.
