Service in Eugene & Junction City

We've just completed the semi-annual service on our Allure. First stop, Carrier & Sons RV Service, for general maintenance and some fixes. Teresa scheduled us in promptly and Tom & crew did their usual professional job.
Next stop - Bob Dickman/Les Schwab for new tires. We arrived at 8 AM and were on our way before noon with 8 new Bridgestones, spin balanced, mounted and priced right.
We also enjoyed some great dining at the 6th Street Deli. Donna is a Country Coach "graduate" and now operates the deli just west of the old CC delivery center. Great food as always and a place we eagerly recommend.
Those of us who travel the west coast are very fortunate to have these good competent folks look after our equipment and keep us so well fed.

Oh yes, the old delivery center is open again - as a food bank??..

Jim,

I am going to be buying tires for my Inspire in the fall. I will be buying them in Oregon as I am domicle in Oregon and will be visiting in the fall. Would you mind telling me why you chose Bridgestones? Additionally what you paid per tire. I have been researching Continentals and Bridgestone as I need 12R22.5 for my coach.

Jock,

We needed tires when we passed through JC last spring and Bob Dickman convinced me to go with the Bridgestone R250's rather than the Michelins that everyone else has been buying.
The price was better than the Michelins and the ride is awesome! Having lived in the mountains of Colorado most of my life, I am a mountain driver. The performance, ride, handling and road noise is so much better than those nasty Toyos that came on the coach. Mine are 12Rx22.5 also.

Hi Jock -

I chose to listen to the advice of the people it trust, and they chose the Bridgestones. The total price for 8 tires, spin balanced, new valves etc. was $5,600.
The origanal Goodyears served us well for 6 years & 30,000 miles it was just time for a change.

Jock,

Did your Inspire come with 12R22.5?

Mine came with 11R22.5 Toyos.

Is this your first tire change?

That's what I paid more or less for my 8 315r 22.5 Continentals. My Michelins only lasted 40 months instead of 60 so they gave me credit for the unused time on my 12R's. Did you get the new stems that make inflating the dual tires a breeze?

No, I kept the stock stems, they work OK.
If you get JC be sure and stop at the 6th Street Deli, it's the best part of the deal!

Jim,

That sounds awfully expensive! Although we use 11R22.5, we paid $2,500 for 6 Michelin XZA3s four years ago at a local truck tire dealer.

There was a combination book store, deli and nick-nack store on 6th St that closed in 09 I believe. It was on the same side of the Street as the CC make ready, sales and "Home for CC owners with out a Coach" while at service on 4th st. There was an Ace Hardware Store next door. Maybe it was a True Value store. They had the best Marion Berry Pie, which I loved and quiche, that Carol Loved. I wonder if its the same people.

Michelin raised their tire prices 5 or 6 times last year. The deal with Les Schwab, is they include dismounting the old tires, mounting, balancing, replacing stems and gaskets, weights etc etc when they give you the price on the new tires. If your there for a CC friends rally, they'll give rally discount in addition. . They are about 3% higher than here at home for just the tire, before the 10% off. . By the time you add the 8.25% sales tax, labor, weights, balancing, the so so attitude of non Les Scwab tire dealers, you end up saving over 15% and you have had a nice experience, which is not to often now days. NAme some where else that will honor a Michelin warranty, when Michelin won't. Of course you had to buy the Michelins at Les Schwab in the first place or be the original owner of the coach that was supplied with Michelins by Les Schwab. I've bought 4 sets of tires over the years and did my home work and research each time. I came out ahead each time. This last time, 2012, I replaced all my transmitters for the Smart tire, too and got a heck of a deal. The new Honda, got transmitters, too. Most of the other tire dealers are of no help there. .

Jay,

The original owner ordered them when he ordered the coach from CC. He wanted the larger carrying capacity. CC had Dickman add them and before he accepted delivery. The only negative is tires are taller and this effects the leveling system. Not enough to mess with.

The cost I quoted included everything you mentioned, including tax. Like I said, it sounded very expensive, even with larger tires and two extra. The shop I used had a great attitude, and I plan to go back there next time I need tires. You're quite welocme to pay twice the price!

Ditto on Les Schwab... Last October I had my CC in for complete service and pre road inspection with Country Coach Corp HQ in Junction City last fall. My original Goodyears were nearing the 6 year mark according to the DOT stamp, and not knowing how well they were treated by the original owner since original purchase, I felt it was foolish to try and nurse any more mileage out of them, given the horror stories about tires with 120 PSI blowing out on the road.
We wanted to start our adventures with peace of mind and brand new tires which I could keep careful track of. Goodyear specifically tells you that under the best of conditions RV tires should be replaced every 6 years, and a Goodyear dealer showed me exactly what happened to a coach when a tire like mine in its 7th year blew out. It was ugly and I decided right then and there to start out our travels in our new coach witbh new tires and a TPMS to keep careful track of the pressures... as low pressure is one of the deadliest sins. At the recommendation of another very techy friend and fellow coach owner, I chose the Hawkshead Talon TPMS with the flow thru sensors and am very happy with it. It can also track my tandem axle boat trailer!
Anyhow I had replaced a front pair of Goodyears on my previous coach with Toyos at the recommendation of Les Schwab... they were significantly cheaper than the other brands and I was very pleased with the results... handling improved dramatically over Goodyear G670s which I had on two different authorities as "good load tires but lousy steers." So naturally I considering installing Toyos again on my CC but unfortunately my stock tire size is 295/80R22.5 and Toyo does not make that size. I considering dropping down a size to 275's, I think it was, as that would have saved me a bundle, but was advised against it.
So again at Schwab's recommendation, last October, I went with 8 new Michellin XZA-2 295/80R22.5 which cost me $890 each including FET and the valve stem kits (well worth it), were extra. They are probably more now. This was the local Schwab in Junction City right across the street from CCC where they take all their coaches for new tires, and they specifically did NOT recommend the less expensive XZA3's which, if I recall correctly, are considered truck tires.
Anyhow that's my story and I cannot speak highly enough about the Michelin XZA2's and Hawkshead TPMS.

We have lost two rear inside tires on two separate occasions. In both cases the thread separated from the casing--the second time the tire actually still held pressure. The first tire was a Bridgestone and the second was a Toyo. Our XZA3s are actually 5 years old and in great shape. I would not put any other tire than Michelins on our coach. I have no idea why Les Scwab would not recommend them-- they probably make more money on the tires they recommend!

Did you look into the FMCA Michelin Tire Program?

For years they were buying Michelins literally by the truck load and singing their praises. When I bought two new Michelins for my steer axles they were not competitive.

The factory owns the Michelin store in Spring field and with the economy being what it is Michelin needs to sell tires and support its dealers. So naturally they are going to give their dealers the most support. And of course, being an independent, BOB Dickmans Les Schwab is looking for a deal, too with dependable tire suppliers that don't hassle them. And Michelin is having issues with tire wall cracking. It happened to me and I saw two other coaches with tires only a year old experiencing the same issue. Check with Guaranty Service department, they have had Michelin issues, too. The Issue wasn't on CC either. Monaco and Newmar happened to be the two coaches on site while I was there. Michelin does not warrant wall cracking, I checked. But Don and Paul, paid me for the time remaining I should have expected. In all the years I have been buying tires only two dealers have backed up what they sell without selling you a supplemental service contract. One has gone out of business. Les Schwab is still doing well. I loved my Michelins, they were quiet and gave a great ride. I could have installed a new set of Michelins for the same price as my Continentals. But as Continental guaranty is for 7 years and includes side wall cracking I chose to change brands. I had Continentals on my previous Allure and they performed very well. And for the first year so have these new Continentals I have in my Intrigue. And because they are 315's and not 12R I can reduce the pressure on the front tires to approach the ride comfort of the Michelin. As the tread pattern of the 315 Continental is similar to Michelins and is not the same pattern as the XZ2 12R, the ride is not as quiet on asphalt or concrete with large substrate as is common in Oregon highways.

I think Schwab is pretty competitive on everything except Michelins. They do not participate in the FMCA Michelin program as far as I know, so their prices will definitely higher. Don't quite understand why, but that seems to be the way it is. There is another dealer in Eugene who does participate in the FMCA program. I got 6 12R's for $4,532 mounted and balanced from them...Wyatt's in downtown Eugene. Huge difference from the OEM Goodyears! Have Michelin 315's on the steer that are now 2 years old.
I would prefer to have used Schwab, but the $$$ didn't make it feasible.
