Carpet

All,

Does anyone have any experience in replacing their coach carpeting? I took my 2000 Allure in for a price at the local RV shop and was shocked when I was quoted ~$6-7K for the work. When I questioned why so high, I was told that the entire slide had to be removed in order to do the job properly, and simply cutting the edge where the slide entered the coach would eventually lead to jamming the old carpet and a bigger repair. Any suggestions?

Go to Links and checkout Ernie Ekberg's Flooring. We had hardwood flooring put in but he does carpeting and most other flooring. We were very happy with his work and the cost.

No slide. I pulled driver and passenger seat, moved couches, pulled the old carpet, and everthing else......took me two days. Carpet at Lowes and hired local carpet guy. Looks so much better. I have $1000 in it 1998 Allure 36'

Thanks, Lyle! You are so good to offer your experiences! We hope to do the same thing re the carpet with our 06 Inspire, 3 slides. How did the carpet guy handle the edges of the slides? Thank you!

Oh my goodness, do we love our Samsung refrigerator! We installed that in our coach last summer. Thanks again for all the help you gave us all on that!

We had our carpet replaced in GA several years ago. Our 2001 Affinity is probably not much different than yours.............from the slide installation perspective. So I doubt that the slide has to be removed to complete the job. But I don't know for sure. Our work took several days and cost over $3,000. Can't remember exactly the amount. It was done by Coach Craft by Mc Donald in Columbus, GA. They did a great job for us on the carpet and other interior work. They installed a metal frame to hold a flat panel TV in the front, cabinet work, etc. Great people to work with.

Removing the slides are a cash cow foir the dealer. I never had to do that as you can see the edge of carpet from up under the outside of the slide if you pry the seal down. Ernie Ekberg

I haveta weigh in here briefly. The carpet in our 08 coach is fine so we haven't looked into replacement. But your report about "slide must be removed" made me smile. So Country Coach Inc started cutting corners in its last years and one place they REALLY screwed up was in the tile dept. They did not seal the wood underlayment properly and used some sort of cheap thinset to lay the tile with. Improper sealing on the wood had the effect that some of the moisture was sucked out of the thinset and the result was cracking and crumbling of grout and some loose and cracked tiles in our coach. And the cheap thinset should NEVER have been used in the first place in a coach where floors flex and move. STUPID. Mine is NOT the only late model country coach where I have seen these grout issues. I guess the problem was fairly widespread.
I considered having CCC in JC redo the whole flooring and replace both carpet and tile with all new tile and they gave me a ballpark estiimate of around $8K. Ouch! Fat chance. They also said the slide would have to come out as the tile goes up under the kitchen slide. Other shops said they could remove what you can see up to just under the kitchen slide and replace the flooring without removing any slides, but it was still very expensive.
We were fortunate to find a few boxes of the identical discontinued tile from the Florida Tile manufactuer of the original tile... but in 18" squares instead of 13". So I ordered them and had a regular freelance tile setter cut down the 18's to 13", microbevel the edges, gouge out all the grout on my floor, pop up 5 cracked tiles and replace them with the new microbeveled ones and set them with a flexible mastik from home depot. Then he redid all the gout with Quartzlock2 flexible urethane grout from Bostik as recommended by another coach guy. It all came out fabulously well, and 6 months later have not seen another hint of crumbling grout, or lifting/cracked tiles. My total cost was around $500 for materials and labor AND I have another ten replacement tiles ready to go should another one break. I hope this may help someone with a similar issue

Did you have the heated floors? If so how was that handled? I was able to find the exact same tile as the original.

Hi Dan... no sorry... I do not have the heated floors... I have no idea how that may complicate the issue. You probably would have to be pretty carefull about digging out all the grout... but that is just a guess. I will say that the tiles that came up, popped off leaving almost no residue on the floor... so terrible was the adhesion from the original thinset. Shame on you, Bob Lee. I wouldn't expect this kind of shoddy workmanship in a Jayco, much less a Country Coach, and ESPECIALLY not in your so-called "Founder's Edition" which theoretically celebrated the illustrious history of the brand. Apparently pride of workmanship was long since dead by the time this coach rolled off the assembly line. The good news is that due to the faulty original installation, there was very little work involved in removing cracked tiles and very minimal scraping of any residual grout off the subfloor to prepare for the mastic and new tiles. I would imagine whatever sort of mastik you use, it would need to be heat tolerant. And I would also talk to the folks at Bostik to see how heat tolerant the Quartzlock2 is... but for our application I would have to say it was perfect.

I had a discussion with Gold heat when we purchased our new 2004 Allure. They told me that removing tile from over the electric heating pad for the floor is a very trick operation and requires an expert to do it without running the pad. He also indicated that all of the experts were currently working at Gold Heat. In other words bring it back to them.
Of course that was in 2004 so things may have changed but if it were me I would have a lengthy discussion with anyone quoting on replacing a tile over a heated floor about the potential problems.

That is why I have been hesitant to have the work done. Also, the two quotes have been about $200 per tile because of the issue you raised.

When I took delivery on our new 2004 Allure at Lazydays in FL the leads to the thermistor controlling the Gold Heat had been cut off right where they go under the tile in the bathroom. The thermistor is a couple of inches in under the tile. The correct repair would have been to lift the tile and replace the thermistor but Lazydays flatly refused to do it. Their reason was that couple of month earlier they had lifted a tile for a warrantee repair and in doing so destroyed the tile heat pad. They had to remove all of the tile and replace both the heat pad and the tile. They got no help from Gold Heat as I understand it so clearly they were not interested in a repeat performance.
I settled for a somewhat less than perfect solution but avoided a trip to the west coast to Gold Heat. The repair never gave me any problem but the incident taught me a lot about the dangers of removing tiles over Gold Heat. Again that was now over 9 years ago and things do change.

Gold Heat now say that they have a repair kit for the heat mat and Doug Beaudry??? at CC says there is a device that tests the continuity and will beep when there is a break. I just had a heat system installed under new tile in my stick house and the installers used something similar which stays connected until the job is finished. Doesn't change the fact that $200 per tile is a bit expensive. Sitting back looking for a less expensive option.

When we were checking out various flooring possibilities, cherry wood being our first choice, I saw several samples of cork flooring which came in either squares or rectangles. Beautiful colors, and we are very interested in replacing our living room carpeting in the coach with the cork. I'm looking forward to hearing what Ernie thinks. I suspect you can see cork flooring in almost any flooring business.

Cork is soft and absorbs sound. I always adhere the material so that any movement is negated. Ernie Ekberg
