Why not paint the damn roof?

I am tired of scrubing and buffing the roof of my 2000 Allure, plus at my age it is getting dangerous fooling around on the the top of a motorhome. Last year, I scrubbed things down with a green horsehair scrub pad, which does a good job of clearing up the oxodized jell coat, and wondered if I could paint it. So I painted a square foot or so with exterior latex semi-gloss white for a test. I was up there again today scrubbing, and my test patch looked great, and is sticking like glue. I have wondered why CC doesn't paint them with auto paint during construction? The breakdown of clear coat is not a new problem, and has been around since 1991 or so. I also wonder if one couldn' paint the roof with house paint and run the edge of the paint a 1/4 in or so over the clearcoat edge. Any coments?

I'm with you Avery, I think you have a good idea. Newmar paints the entire coach and brags about it. I would like to know what kind of paint Newmar uses. I think I'll ask my boat repair guy who paints old fiberglass boats all the time. jerry in NM, '00 Magna.

Interesting question, but you could also paint it with a semi-gloss clear coat and achieve the same result but without the blending problem IMHO.

The trouble with clear-coat, is the sun eats it up. Back in the early days of CC clear-coating coaches I had a long talk with one of the brother owners of CC. He was probably one of the brightest people CC ever had, and could be very direct and blunt, something I found refreshing. He said 1. Fiberglass never really stabilizes, its in constant flux, and clearcoat does not like fiberglass, and that is why roofs are not clearcoated. On metal surfaces it works fine. Anyway they do make white paints for fiberglass, but spraying them is a big job, and I just wonder if latex might not work too.

Hi Folks,

For a protective roof coating that will last the life of the coach (strong words!), not worry about clear coat peeling problems and the best uv protection, consider Astec #900 ceramic insulating coating.

Having painted a few boats, having a fiberglass factory in the family, and owning a paint store, I will add some semi-qualified comments. If you have the ability to use a production gun, a catalyzed product such as Ramenel [sp?] produces an excellent finish on glass. A little experience and lots of prep work are required.
As for using semi-gloss exterior latex house paint, we have painted about an acre of metal roofs and walls with excellent results. It sticks until it wears away. That can be applied with anything including a broom. Just depends on what finish you are happy with. As with all paints, most of the success is in the prep and application.

All the high end manufactures say they paint the entire coach but does that include the roof? Our coach is 3 years old and the only thing I do now is use a special mop to apply 303 to the roof every 3 months. Takes about one half hour and works fine. About a year ago I did remove 2 years of chalking and the 303 has done the job ever since I cleaned it up.

What kind of special mop do you use to apply the 303? Also, don't you have to wash the roof first? Looks like more than one-half hour to me...

Our roof was 15 months old when we were at Lazy Days working with Tim Reid on another matter. He saw some white streeks on the sides of our coach and said our roof was chaulking and advised us to do something before the chaulking got to bad and ruined our clear coat. We had never done anything but wash the roof. Tim told us to get it back in shape by buffing the roof with an auto rubbing compound and then apply a uv auto wax. We hired some one to do this and then about 1 month later I started using 303 uv protector every 3 months on the roof. We also wash the roof almost every time we wash the coach. Our roof is now 3 years old and we have had no chaulking since we started using 303 which is available for Camping World. 303 is a non petroleum based uv protector wax you can use on many things including fiberglass and tires.
It is a liquid that you spray on , spread around with a mop and then wipe up the excess. It does not make the roof shiny like a wax but it works. Our clear coat is in great shape and we no longer have any chaulking.

The last time I did this was in Texas in late August, 90 degrees under some trees. I used one of those fancy mops you buy at an RV show and wonder why you purchased it. Its the mop with the blue pads that hold to the bottom with velco. Using it on this job was a pleasure. I used a waterless car wash on the roof first to clean it and then the 303. I started out doing only half the roof. Then did th entire roof because it went so well, no more then then 30 t0 40 minutes, used 3 mop pads that my wife had to wash and used a rag to do some buffing from the mop end.

I plan to do it this way from now on. Bill G. 2001 Magna #5998
