wireless network

Yahoo Message Number: 6577
Has anyone used a campground with wireless network? I recently stepped up to a new laptop and my kids insist on my using this feature. It seems to me there has been some other posts about it, but alas I lost all of that when I changed computers.
We are currently in Denver and headed to Branson, Mo. for a few days. Is it true that they card you at the city limits for appropriate age to enter town, say 62 or over? (just kidding)

Thanks

Dan:

How do you get your high speed data to your motor home? I need to know if can use my laptop with my wireless capability to connect to an HSD wireless connection provided by the campground?
Many times I have to dial out to get my email. I'd like to simply jump on the campground wireless network--if they are available.

Thanks,
Larry

Larry, Where are you staying in Denver? I am also in Denver and we are heading to Colorado Springs tomorrow for the day. We plan to drive (the car) thru the Royal Gorge, heard it was very picturesque. We also live in the San Diego area and as I recall, you said you were going to be staying in the San Diego area for the winter. I'd like to meet you! Dale Hollick

Dale: We are parked by our kid's place in Aurora, out by the Cherry Creek Dam. We will be here until Wednesday, then we are going to Branson to meet with some RV friends we always stay with at DeAnza in San Diego. At this point we don't have a firm plan for San Diego due to the closing of DeAnza. We like to spend winters there and will probably do some time in Arizona and San Diego this winter. Lets keep in touch and perhaps we can meet up there during our three month stay Larry

Thanks Dan. I've never been accused of being the brightest bulb on the Christmas Tree, as you can see. One more question: How do you know in advance if the campground you are going to has wireless capability?
I suppose the obvious answer is to call them first. Up until now, I have not had the equipment (still don't have the knowledge) to run such an amimal but I would like to be able to access the net without either buying a rooftop reciever and paying the monthly dues, or buying a landline access.
Not to old to learn, eh? My kids say there is still hope for me, albeit slim.

Hi Candy and Dale,

I visited the Royal Gorge this summer on the way to JC. It was awesome! I parked at the Coast to Coast park in Monument, CO, about an hour from the Gorge.

Hi Ree, nice to hear from you. We have really enjoyed the Denver area. The Royal Gorge, Pikes Peak, CU, & the Performing Arts Center. We are heading west tomorrow, back to San Diego by the end of the mo.
Tried to contact Larry Hanson while he was in the area, he didnt answer. Take care, Dale and Candy

Larry, here is some info that you may find helpful. There are companies that go out and set up the wireless nets in the campgrounds. I did a Google search for "RV wireless internet" and "RV wireless internet access".
Two that came up:

linkspot.com is for sell now! What are you waiting for? - NameShow - Good... http://www.rvaccess.com/index.htm These websites have FAQs that will help you understand the process.
As you will see, this is an emerging technology, it does not seem any one company has yet signed up a large number of parks. The benefit of one company working with a lot of parks will be portability. If you sign with an access company, you could pay for monthly access, rather than daily, at a less costly overall rate, and use the service at any park that has their service, as you travel. However, the wireless card you purchase for your computer will work fine with the wireless service offered by any park, no matter who they contract with to provide the wireless service.
I have a Motosat Datastorm on my coach, so I have not used the wireless service yet. However, as it becomes available at enough parks, I will use it, as you do not have to worry about always getting a site with open sky for the dish.
Hope this helps.

Bill, Larry:

Interesting to note that on our trip back to Alaska this year we stayed at four campgrounds that had wireless access.
While that number doesn't seem large we only stayed at 8 or 9 campgrounds total. (~50%)

One of them didn't know they had 'wireless access'. It turned out to be the camp office Lan running as an open system. (had a great signal around most of the park)

Two others were also open systems. They said "if you can figure it out, use it". (no fees)

The last one was a for fee system. But again it was an open system. The manager got kind of angery when he was told users could access the system without paying for it.

All of them seemed to have good bandwidth.

Always check as you never know where you may find wireless access! We even found a truck stop resturant that provided wireless at the dinning tables (and good distance out into the parking lot).

Good Luck..
Jim

Flying J has wireless networks installed in most of their locations now. I've never used them but my recollection is that their prices were reasonable. Might be handy when traveling extensively.

Some public libraries also have open (free, no login or password) wireless networks. When I found out the Rapid City, SD library had one I picked up a D-Link card for my laptop ($30 on sale).
Installation was a snap - nothing to configure, the card automatically found the library network and I was quickly on the web with a (shared) 11 Mbit/sec connection.

Anyone know what it costs a library to install and operate such a system? Some libraries I visit are interested in providing a wireless network. I'd like to be able to give them a ballpark figure. My guess is it would be more cost effective than purchasing and supporting more desktop computers on their existing networks.

Here are a few more links for locating wireless network "hotspots" (from a recent USA Today article):

Office Depot (Rapid City, SD). I imagine all the office supply and computer chain stores have them. Sale prices and rebates are common.
