Good Sam Rip-off

To all,

In 2010 I bought a Veranda 300 and since it was an orphaned coach I thought it wise to buy an Extended Service Plan. I am a Life-member of Good Sam and thus called them first. BIG MISTAKE!!!! The salesman told me that Good Sam was the most comprehensive plan out there. He stated the plan even covered normal wear and tear and cited as an example that if by couch in my coach showed excessive wear Good Sam would replace it. Now almost 3 years later I learn the Good Sam plan only covers moving parts. The latest is that my Norcold Refrigerator has failed. Replacement cost is around $5000. Good Sam will only cover the electronic board and since I have a $500 deductible that works out to nothing, zero, nada.
Bottom line is that I will never do any business of any kind with Good Sam again. Since the death of Art Rouse this has turned into the biggest rip-off in the RV world as far as I am concerned. Just thought I would let people know.

Post your concerns on www.rv.net. It is a forum that the upper management monitor to solve issues such as yours. I've used it because the main circuit board in my older model Splendide washer was no longer available. That meant that my washer needed to be replaced. When I contacted GS they said that they did not replace appliances due to obsolete parts. When I asked them what condition would have to exsist for them to replace the appliance if parts were available. They had no answer. So I posted my issue on the www.rv.net website in the Dear Marcus forum. within a couple hours I was contacted and told that they were looking into it. Two days later I had a new Splendide washer/drier. Good Sam paid the entire bill less my deductible.

We replaced our Norcold hazard with a Samsung 197 for around $3k, and are delighted. We had ours done at Fountain RV in Lakeland FL. Matt Carr also does it.

Wow... that is a word to the wise. I hope someone from GS monitors this forum and takes heed. We have a towing policy with them (as well as one with AAA) and after reading this post, I am thinking I may not even renew that and go with Coach Net instead.
On the subject of after market Extended Service Plans we got one with the coach when we bought it which is good until 2014 some time and it is an Easycare policy. Honestly I have only good things to say about them Like any of these policies, your repair shop has to be prepared to argue the points of each repair with them I doubt any Extended Service Plan will just routinely ok every request... but we have had covered repairs through three different repair shops Country Coach Corp in JC
Premier RV in JC

Quinn Caterpillar in Oxnard CA

In each case Easycare covered multiple repairs, but let me say this...
Country Coach Corp got payments from Easycare but billed me in addition to what EC paid... and even billed me for their time in dealing with EC.
Quinn Caterpillar worked with EC and I paid ZERO except the deductible
Premier RV in JC worked with EC, really argued my case with them on several items, successfuly, I might add, and the only thing I paid for on 3 separate warranty items in the same visit was my deductible.
Needless to say Premier RV in JC has won all my future business in this area

Hello Al. We do get tired of "paying to go to school" don't we. I have read a great deal on extended warranties and most advise that you almost need a attorney to understand the pros and cons ( many more cons) of a warranty agreement. I am looking at various plans myself and thanks for the heads up on the moving parts.

I have just had a good experience with Allegiance purchased through Wholesale Warranties. I suggest you work with Brittany Malkin, she did right by me. No, I don't have any ties to either Wholesale Warranties or Allegiance. I just feel that I have been treated right with my claim.

I'm sorry to hear about your fridge problems, and understand the frustration and your perception of fraud. However whenever signing a contract, it is always wise to read the fine print. If what was said by a salesman (and that truly sounded like an snake oil person, and this is where you should look for some recourse via contacting Marcus on RV.Net as mentioned) is not reflected in the wording - get it updated, or re-explained in English...
Sure not trying to rub salt in your wound - but it is the contract that matters, and what you paid for. I bet if the salesman who sold you the rig said that the would add new batteries and tires at the agreed to price - you would have had that put in writing. Even more so when it comes to service contracts:)!
I do find that Marcus and Camping World are slowly starting to rebuild credibility on many fronts. Since their is nothing close to Camping World as far as volume of stores and products - I wish them luck. I know out local Camping World in San Marcos had a pretty spotty record from the service front. Yes, they would correct or make good on things that were pointed out by customers - but a customer should not need to do this. Last time I talked with the Service Manager, he said they were working hard on recruiting, and paying accordingly, more quality tech's. Frankly, most of the time Camping World tech's used to be a place for rookies to go 'burn as the learned'.
I wish you the best of luck, and suggest a persistent but polite 'climbing the ladder' explaining the 'verbal wording' vs what you are finding now... Usually people will do the right thing, when treated fairly, and when they have the authority to do so.

Note: We don't have a service/warranty contract. After Norcold came out with their third Mickey Mouse recall - we pulled the plug and got the Amish Cooling Unit, as we wanted to retain LP capability. Very pleased with this, and a new control board and Amish Cooling Unit (not a new Norcold cooling unit) - should be much less then the price point you noted... Worth considering, if retaining LP is important to you...

For what it's worth, I completely agree. I live in the town where CW's corporate headquarters is located and I will drive 250 miles to keep them from ever working on my coach again. I recently bought a part for my CC from the local CW store because it was convenient. It has already failed and CW told me they would not back my purchase except thru the manufacturer. Told me they would call the manufacturer to see what they would do and call me back. Days later, they have not called.....I never expected them to do so. If you can avoid it, NEVER GO TO CW FOR ANYTHING ESPECIALLY SERVICE........

I also agree....The only organization promoting more propaganda than Camping World / Good Sams is AARP....the end product / service doesn't remotely resemble that which is promoted.

Agree. Learned this lesson over 10 years ago with Good Sam. Dometic went on the blink - advised they would only cover rebuilt cooling unit. When asked where would I get one, was referred to outfit in Florida. 3 rebuilt units later (all bad) each installed, no compensation - finally purchased a new unit for $3500. RIP-OFF is too kind a word. They don't disclose all the exclusions until after the fact and even then, subject to interpretation.

Also, because our refrig is in our slide we have very limited space and thus a Samsung just won't fit. My wife found a Whirlpool refrigerator that is 66 5/8 " tall which will barely work. Premier Coach Services in Tucson will install it next Tuesday. Eric there is a great guy and I am confident that if he says he can make this work he will. Not sure of total cost yet but the refrigerator itself was on sale for around $1400 total which is a far cry from $5000 for living with a Norcold fire hazard and since we already have solar panels and seldom dry camp Eric is sure we have the electrical capacity we need to make this residential refrigerator work. Thansk again for all the input.

In regards to the discussion on insurance !! I suggest you google Progressive insurance And see what the owner Peter Kelly supports with your premiums and then decide if you Are comfortable doing business with them Dennis Parker

I asked then to consider reviewing my RV Book in their magazine, as they have reviewed other RV books, They said NO as I would be competing with them for business.
I couldn't wait for my magazine subscription to expire. And I felt sorry for them when the economy went south so I renewed back then.

Once you have installed a residential fridge in your coach, you will wonder why you waited so long to do it. We got rid of the NoCold in our previous coach and installed a Frigidaire that fit nicely in the Norcold opening with very few mods. We loved it.
