Hurricane Heater

I have a 2001 CC Affinity with a Hurricane system. Can tell me how to get it to heat the water in the how water tank? I know Must be missing something obvious.

Hi Richard,

I only use the Hurricane to heat water during the time I am also using it for heating. The rest of the time I use propane to heat the water. Can you get the Hurricane to heat your coach?

All heat zones seem to work just fine. Burner lights off and shuts down just like it should. I saw in the manual there were 2 valves that got turned off for a "summer" loop? I can only find one valve. But if I don't have "furnace" selected on the thermostat the Hurricane doesn't light off?

Rich, as far as i know, in those days, if you have a hurricane and a water heater, the water heater should be a special propane/electric Atwood. It has a pipe welded on the outside for the hurricane coolant. There is nothing to do but run the hurricane to heat your coach. Never heard of a Seward water heater in these coaches.

Its my understanding the Hurricane is not the same as Aqua Hot, which replaced it in the 2004 CC coaches. Hurricane does not heat your tap water, it only helps heat the coach. Tap water & shower water is heated by an electric hotwater heater in my 2003 Affinity but I think some have propane or diesel heaters. Mine is located in the plumbing bay under the bathroom. If electric and not heating, check your 120 volt breakers. If it was winterized and the breaker was not turned off, your heating element is burned up (can also happen over time). To address someone else's question, my Hurricane won't heat the coach, it just helps out, the diesel furnace does most of the work.

Hurricane heaters ARE the same as an Aqua Hot as far as operation. It has a boiler that heats the coolant, it then circulates the heated coolant thru it loop, usually thru a few heat exchangers & then thru the water heater (or vice verses). Most will have a summer by-pass, so then the heated coolant doesn't go thru the heat exchangers but only thru the boiler, expansion tank and the water heater - thus not bringing heat in to the interior living space.
Hurricane heaters are only the boiler, thus the need to install a water heater separately. Most hurricane system's I've worked on use a water heater with a coolant loop inside of the heater and some also installed a small exchanger in line to aid in performance.

My 2003 Allure had a Hurricane heater and it supplied the domestic hot hater using a exchanger coil immersed in the heater boiler tank. It was a on-demand system and was the only source of hot water. The Hurricane's primary heat source was it's diesel burner but it had two 120 volt heater elements that would adequately provide both heat and hot water during low demand periods like outside temps down into the mid 40s and no long showers back to back. Like all electric heating the recovery was much slower than the diesel burner. Both can be used at the same time.

There was no hot water reservoir tank as it is an on-demand system. The exchanger coil in the heater itself only holds about a quart of water.

The unit that replaced it during 2004 was actually an Aqua hot model called the Hydro Hot. It was the 5 gal boiler tank baby brother of the larger 16 gallon Aqua Hot model. A couple of years later Aqua Hot abandon the name Hydro Hot and began labeling all their models as various model numbers of Aqua Hot units. Many are not aware that the smaller Aqua Hot unit prioritizes hot water over heating.
A cold water sensor located on the hot water outlet will shut down the circulating pumps and fans if the hot water outlet pipe drops below a preset temperature. Basically it quarantines that you will always step from a hot shower into possibly a cold bathroom but not from a possibly cold shower into a hot bathroom. This little feature has been the cause of a lot of panic if you do not know it is there.
