Freedom 20D not charging batteries

Yahoo Message Number: 6636
Great group, very informative. My domestic batteries go dead unless I charge them with an outside battery charger. The wiring diagram in the CC owner manual helps, but it doesn't quite make sense, set breakers etc. and not kicking in. Inverter seems to work only when the water heater breaker is on????? Have fooled with the inverter switch under the sink and have checked a lot of connections and have good continuity everywhere I have checked including the transfer switch, breaker box, battery leads, etc. Is the charger burned up or am I missing something obvious? We live in Evansville, IN and I see service centers in Nashville, TN and Indianapolis, IN and don't know which one would be the best, Nashville TN is actually closer and more convenient. We have a HR dealer only, here in town and not sure he will work on a CC. My electrician says he really needs a better wiring diagram of the Freedom 20D Inverter/Battery charger itself and the CC manual and Freedom manual don't show anything very specific.
Thanks, Pat Reisinger, 1997 36' Allure Rogue single slide 30117.

Pat: I have the same system (had) I believe. 99 Intrigue. Try a few things:
Will the batteries charge while the engine is running? I assume so and we know you have a 110 charging problem. (obvious)
In my case, I talked to the tech's at Zantrex. They gave me this procedure: Loosen the screws holding the front panel of the inverter in place. Rap, tap, etc on the front panel. Retighten the screws. Test the charging system with a meter to see of the batteries are receiving charge. If so you are OK till the next time.
On our model inverter, the engineers needed a day off or something because the design is flawed from the start.
The contacts plates meet at right angles, from the front of the panel to the side. Screws hold them on and guess what they do for safety? Right! wireties! How silly. A little corrosion on the points and you lose charging power or in my case power to one side of the coach.
Rapping on the front panel re-established contact. If that works and you feel lucky, buy a little can of contact spray from Radio Shack and point it at the boads. May fix it.
If you want to see my re-do job, go to the "photos" section of this group site. I put in a new inverter, added 8 new batteries and totally rewired the system to be able to test curcitry without taking the whole thing out. Well OK, my son did it, but I watched. I think it's entitled "Larrys photos".

We have the same in a '97 Intrique...and we had the same trouble...loose contact points...
Stopped at a Zantrex service mans shop in Wisconsin and he redid it with gold...he said the silver corrodes and should have never been put in there...only charges us $80 and we had been unscrewing and tapping for several days...Huie and Mary Lindsey 10379

Works great so far...

Thanks, got it working last night by just taking the cover off and now will look into getting those contact points upgraded. Pat.

Thanks, took the cover off and it started working! Will have to see what was impinging on the contacts for a definitive fix, but doesn't appear to be "burned up" Pat Reisinger.
