Spare tires onboard?????

Yahoo Message Number: 91283
Hello all. We have owned our 2003 Intrigue for about 2 years now and love it! We still work full time but take as many trips as we can. Just replaced all 6 tires with michelin XZA Energy using fmca Michelin program. I kept my old tires that are date stamped 2008 but only have 20k miles on them. A couple truckers are interested in buying them for their trailor. Guy who installed the new tires asked me if I was going to keep two tires as spares. I thought maybe one but two??? His rationale was that most repair shops don't carry 295 80 22.5 and it would be costly and timely to get new tire in case of tire blowout, puncture, etc. I would like groups thoughts. Do you carry spare tires? If so, how many and where?

We have been told for many years that most roadside assistant trucks or local shops do not carry tires that fit our Intrigue. We have 12Rx 22.5 's on the 8 wheels on the coach. This size tire will not fit (mounted) anywhere in the coach, so we must carry it in our Tundra pickup. Since it is a real pain to get it in the truck, we only take it on the long "head north" trip in the spring or the "head south" trip in the fall. Of course we have never needed it, but sitting along the side of the road for a few days doesn't sound very appealing either, since we could run out of wine.

I had a blow out three years ago and TCI came out with a michelin XZA Energy and had me on the road in two hours it was more than FMCA but a better price than most tire shops

I have been RVing for over 40 years. Never carried a spare. Only one incidence of a blow out, and had a mobile out within a couple hours and replaced both fronts. Later replaced the rest.

I agree with Mikee. Dump the tire and stock more wine. I have never heard of waiting more than overnight to get a tire shipped.

We have had two blowouts, one on each side of the inner duals. The first time we had a hard time finding the right size (11R22.5), the second time we were a couple of miles from Van Horn in Texas, and they had the right size in a truck tire shop. When I replaced all six tires with Michelins, I put the tire we got in Van Horn underneath, and it's been there since. Nice to have a wide storage bay! It is out of date, but should get us to the nearest tire shop.

If you have a tag axle, one of the tires from the tag could be used as a spare in a pinch. Of course you would be putting more load on the duals, so you wouldn't want to run at normal highway speeds or for a long distance before fixing it.

Just one more reason I love my tag axle. :-)

I carry two spare tires (un-mounted; just the rubber) in a storage bay underneath. Doesn't make for a quick change because it still requires mounting etc., but it does eliminate the issue of having to find the correct size replacement tire and potentially needing to have it shipped in from afar.

Not to discount the perils of running out of adult beverages, I had a 12R 22.5 on the tag axle go, on I-10 at the Animas NM exit.
Pretty much the middle of no where. It was a Sunday afternoon, called coach net, and they actually found a replacement tire 20 miles away in Animas. Which I believe only has one tire store. An hour or so later, tire changed, and back on the road.
You could have knocked me down with a feather, but that's my story on the 12R tire.

Luck,
Bob
