Direct TV with TiVo

Yahoo Message Number: 6690
Does anybody have a Direct TV/TiVo receiver in their Motorhome NOT hooked up to a phone line? I was already to have someone switch my single LNB dish to a dual LNB and purchase a new receiver to have the TiVo capabilites in my motorhome. I called Direct TV to find out if it would work not being hooked up to a phone line. We are gone in the winter for 4 months and do not have a land line. I could not get anybody, including the installer, to reassure me that it would work.
Direct TV said that the programming and updates come through the phone line. Of course they tell you the same thing when you set up your system and we all know that Direct TV works fine without a phone hookup. Any information would be appreciated.

We have our Dish receiver in our motor home and it works just fine. The only drawback I have heard of is pay per view. Apparently the charges and orders do go through a phone line. I heard one person say they periodically bring their receiver into the house and plug it into a land line to update it....

I've had DirecTV with TIVO in my motorhome for some time (don't have a dual LMB on the Motosat unit like I do now in my home) and it definitely works without begin connected to a phone line - for about 3 to 4 weeks. Then, after this length of time, the Dirct TV portion will continue to work, but TIVO requires a phone call in order to continue it's usual functions such as recording, Season Pass, etc. If no phone connection is made in about 1 month all TIVO functions cease until a phone call is made. However, continuous phone connection is definitely not needed and we don't do Pay For View.

Rick - how long in time have you gone without hooking up TIVO to a phone line? Has it been more than one month? If so, did your unit continue to record? If it DID, I'd love to know how you "programmed" your unit to do so. I'll call TIVO (which, by the way I advised against doing) and they hadn't a clue.

TIVO is the only way to watch TV in my viewpoint and I wouldn't be without it.

Tom,

By a phone call do you mean plug into a phone line or call them up yourself?

Hi Joel

No, I don't mean "calling them" myself. That's not a good idea.
What I mean is attaching the TIVO/DirecTV unit to a phone line and then allowing the TIVO to generate a call itself (via it's computer) or my forcing the TIVO to make a call thru the set up menu,.

Does this make sense?

Thanks. That is what I thought you meant but I just wanted to be sure. My wife is addicted to TiVo but I guess since we are usually on the road for 4-5 consecutive months without a phone hookup TiVo is not an option. Joel

Can you not just plug it into ANY phone line? I used to haul my DirecTV box down to the campgroup 'computer' phone line. I hooked up the phone line and powered up the box.
You could tell it was 'phoning home' by the relay clicks.
Did that about every three weeks. That was enough to keep the pay-per-view working.

TiVo needs to periodicly make contact with "TiVo Central" in order to update its internal "TV Guide" program directory. If it cannot make contact it will, in time, loose the ability to select programs by name, but can continue to be used by programming recording by time and channel. Since I did not want to pay TiVo a monthly or one time fee this is how I use my unit at home.
