odor from furnace

We are having a problem with a rank odor when we use our furnace. This is only our second winter owning the coach and we haven't been in really cold weather so we have not really used the furnace before. The odor is a different smell from propane. It almost smells like fumes from the black water tank and the only time it happens is when the furnace is running. Is there a filter somewhere that might need to be changed? Do I need to clean out the air ducts? Does anyone have other ideas how to get rid of it? Thanks for your help

Make sure all of your pea traps have water in them and do not forget washer as they dry out And let the gray water tank odors in Denny Parker

No filter. My first thought is cracked heat exchanger, or leaking fitting or gas valve after the valve (since you don't smell it when off) It could be a rodent made a nest or died, check all the heat duct lines under the cabinets, sometimes the duct will be stubbed under the cabinet and uses the toe kick area for the duct, if something dies under there it will smell bad and worse when the heat is on. If after checking the duct work and nothing obvious (like a nest or worse) then pull the furnace and check it out for the same, (once you've got the furnace out separate the outer cage from the main body) look the heat exchanger over closely. If the crack or weld has been broken for a while you'll see evidence of it from where the exhaust gasses where pulling thru and will leave a trail. If still no signs, hook the unit up to lp and power (12vdc) - test for leaks either with liquid leak soap or (better) an electronic lp leak detector, run the unit on the bench, continue lp testing the fittings and once it fires test all around the heat exchanger. At some point during this, you'll find the problem.
FYI - being a 97', probably time to replace the furnace - if for no other reason then the new ones are much quieter while running.
