Zip Dee Awning Won't Retract

Yahoo Message Number: 92905
The Zip Dee awing on our galley will not retract. When I pulled the slide in, the awning bundled on the slide roof and would not allow the slide to retract fully. I manually rolled up the awning and now it looks normal.
My questions are, is it okay to travel with the awning in this situation, until I can get it repaired in 400 miles? There are arms on the awning that lock and keep the awning tight against the coach, but could it still unravel while driving?
Is there an auxiliary way to firmly attach the awning to the coach? The awning canvas has a chrome cover and and I can't see any way to positively secure it. Any ideas or thoughts would be appreciated?

Depending on the wind you will run into, you should be able to make 400 miles. If you take some duct tape and put it on the metal cover and coach length wise, it will make a wind break. 50% of the tape on the cover and 50% on the coach will do it. Might want to do 3 strips 3 foot long along the awning. Been there, done that.

Paul and Carol,

I was able to pass a plastic wire tie around each end of the chrome cover, catching an end screw of the cover. If you do not secure that cover, the awning will unfurl down the side of the coach. There should be enough room at the awning end to just to go around the cover catching a horizontal screw in the end of the cover. You may have to take a phillips screwdriver and back off a screw a turn to wrap the wire tie. As your coach is a newer model than mine, it may be an issue. It sounds like you have a broken spring. One way or another, you need to keep that cover from unrolling by securing the chrome wrap. I've been there and it's a real hassle.

Paul,

Last year while parked at a RV park, my motor on our awning would not retract as yours, What I ended up doing was to loosen up the top two screws where the awning attaches to the coach and use large zip ties and rolled up the awning and tightened the zip ties up to secure it. I also ended up zip tying the large roller to the zip tie I had to secure it to the coach. Mine lasted 2K until I got back into the states to get it fixed. You just need to watch it as you travel, it will unroll as you travel

Get two sewer or dryer hose clamps. I climb up on the roof and attach the clamps one at each end of the awning
There is not much room on the awning roll but it will hold on to a little bit. This will allow you to get the 400 miles you need to travel.
I have to do this when ever we travel in high winds.
Hope this helps.

I had a spring fail one time on my awning on my former 98 Allure and used nylon tie wraps to secure the awning f quite effectively. When I had the Care free and Dometic awnings removed on my Intrigue and Zipp Dee put on over the slide rooms, etc I purposely put small whole in the fabric between the aluminum shield and the rail the awing is mounted to so incase of a failure I could quickly install the ties. Well, sure enough while crossing from Fairfield Sussuin to Lodi California, with high crosswinds I had to install a couple of straps. After I added a few more turns to the springs I have never had an issue while driving.
