CAC's on CAPS ISL's

(Gang - I admit that I've been away from the board more then I like, as I was hoping the new format would sort it's way thru some refinements. And I may have missed how things are supposed to work. But the grouping of threads from a message. And the Search features, still seem very much steps backwards from the old board. And if Herb is still 'The Dude' - not directed towards him in anyways...)

We have a 2004 Allure. It has a July of 2003 built ISL370 CAPS engine. I've been told that some of the ISL's had problems with CAC's (Hope that is what it is called), due to how they were installed in a frame that would 'flex' and thus cause rupturing/leaking. What I have not been able to determine, is the risk years for this?

When we bought our rig three years ago, I paid Cummins Cal Pacific to do a engine/trans/chassis inspection, pull samples of oil/trans fluid, and dyno test the engine. (It had only 12.9K miles on it back then.) They did a few recalls, found the leaking oil pan composite bolts, and the dyno results were very solid (tech said he had not seen an ISL370 deliver that percentage of power to the wheels before). Nothing noted on the CAC. Each year service, now at two different shops, I pay for an hour extra to have the tech crawl under/over/thru to check as many things as they can (hoses and wires for chafing, leaks, loose bolts, bushings, etc. No reports of CAC problems, though I doubt without accessing from the bedroom, they would see very much of the CAC.

I also have Silverleaf reporting 23.8 - 24.3 max boost, whish for the non VGT and this turbo on this ISL370 - is supposed to be about right.

I've had two owners of 2005 era non CC ISL400's tell me that their CAC's ruptured, and had to be replaced. That a shop out of the North West has a slightly redesigned CAC - that makes this a onetime (tough expensive) repair.

So, does anyone know if the ISL370 CAPS of the 2003-2004 era have a questionable CAC designed install?

You'll notice black smoke when accelerating lasts longer at high altitudes as it takes longer for the turbo to build pressure. Another thing you'll notice is the midrange throttle response isn't as good as it use to be. That's what I noticed with my ISL 400 first. It would go up hills at full throttle, but would hesitate or feel a little flat at 40 to 60 % throttle. Sometimes its hard to tell if any loss in expected fuel milage is the CAC or that pesky fan controller.

Hi Smitty, you're right on target with the pressures reported. I'm not aware of any CAC issues with the ISL 370. Our 2002 Intrigue #11329 shows 22-23 psi boost and the same lazy response at high alt. Spent most of the hot summer above 8000' in Wy. and Co. with no problems until a stone kicked off the fan and nicked a tube in the radiator (second time)

Smitty, I have an 2003 Allure 1st Ave. #30898, the 1st Ave. was the late 2002 upgrade of the Allure line. I have the Cummins 370 with CAPS fuel injection system. I discovered a crack in my CAC @ 112,000 mi.
I confirmed the crack by having my local Diesel Shop pressurize the CAC system the mechanic could watch the pressure gauge go down while a 2nd tech could hear the leak and identify the approx. location.
The shop I used for repair removed CAC/Radiator/Oil Cooler package. I decided to have these 3 pieces to a top radiator shop to see if the CAC could be repaired, which it could be, after which they pressure tested for 24 hours.
I had the Radiator and Oil Cooler completely rodded out, cleaned and tested. My Radiator was a Copper/Brass w/Steel Tanks.
I now have 130,000 mi so far so good. I didn't have the shop make any new mounting arrangements to the unit.

My Silverleaf shows Boost to 23.5 to 23.8 max
