Tire failure-speedometer calibration- wheel size

I have just eaten a large piece of humble pie. Tasted great! After reading many posts recently about tire replacement due to age, (my tires are 5 years old) I chose to ignore the recommendations and boldly forged ahead, good advise notwithstanding. My pie came complete with bits and pieces of rubber from a tire exploding at 65 mph!
I have a 99 Intrigue with 43,000 miles. Tires are factory Toyo 275/70 R.22.5. It's a dinette slide model and was excluded from the tire recall back in 99. CC told me that the galley slide models were recalled for front tire replacement with heavier load rated tires, still the same size, but mine didn't qualify. Apparently load distribution issues.
The tires have always appeared small for a 40' coach. When the 2000 models came out, they had the larger size. Either 11R22.5 or 295/8022.5, I don't know.
At any rate, at 43k. on tires appearing great, lots of tread, no sidewall cracks, always garaged except when being used, etc. I had a blowout at 65mph. My guardian angel was sitting on the dash board, because the failing tire was inside the left rear dual. Just 7500 miles ago, I had rotated that tire from the front and put the inside duals on the steering axle. It exploded and took the small mud flat with it. No other damage!! My toad 03 Accord has a full car sheld bra and also came through without damage.
I was on a 3000 mile trip through Branson, Mo and headed back home to Utah. I had checked inflation @95lbs on all tires just two days before, but not on the day of the failure.

That's close enough! Out they go and I'm going for a new set.

Here's the questions for the group:

1. Has anyone upsized from 275 70 to 295 80? The overall size difference is within limits, I believe. Overall width is one inch wider and diameter is 3 inches larger. The advantage is the load rating is 7830 per tire compared to 6500 on the factory tires.

2. Has anyone had an experience with recalibration of the speedometer head? There are dip switches on the back but CC tech told me they didn't know how to reset them!
3. Finally, My factory rim width is 8.75 and the spec's on the tire sheet call for 9.00 with rims. The tire dealer seems to think it doesn't matter. What think ye?

I appreciate any input. Also, maybe I'll pay attention next time.

Larry, I would strongly advise that you ask tech support at CC and get their advice since they set the paramaters for tire selection on your model.

Hi Larry,

My coach is a 2000 Intrigue 36'.

I have changed my tires from the original Toyo 275.70X22.5 to Michelin XZA-2 275.80X22.5 Load Range H. I discussed this with CC prior to the refit and Doug Rutherford recommended the change. I have been very satisfied with the upgrade. The tires run much cooler and the coach tracks and steers better. I recalibrated my speedometer as well, however,I had upgraded the speedo to the VDO as used in the 2000 Magna some time ago, so the calibration procedure is different for the original Datron. The rim width, 8.25, is correct for the Michelin 275.80. One other advantage is I picked up 1/2 mile per gal due to the increased diameter.(I believe the 295.80 you mentioned is too large to fit so you might re-check that). Hope this answers some of your questions.
