Exhaust Heat inside Engine Compartment

Inside the engine compartment in the area above where the exhaust exits gets extremely hot - hot enough to boil water. Is this okay? Doesn't seem so. Is there supposed to be shield or maybe some insulation between the exhaust/muffler and the sheet metal?

I would check for any exhaust leaks from the exhaust manifold, turbo and charge air Boot Clamps, look for dark soot marks along piping that's an indication of an exhaust leak.
Have you just noticed what you think is an exceptionally high temperature from a previous measurement, or is this your first time to notice?
