crank case breather for Cat c9

Yahoo Message Number: 95509
I tried searching on this group without success. (probably because I"m not very good at it.) Our new to us 2005 Inspire has a c9 cat. I noticed we're getting some blow by coming out of the crankcase vent tube. I stuck a temporary fix on it but really need to figure it out. The engine has about 30k miles on it and no other issues.
Part of it may be that the previous owner who I bought it from might have overfilled the crankcase. He said he put ten gallons in it, which seems a bit much. I'm still showing over full, even after blowing some out during out recent trip.
My thoughts are to get home and drain oil to get to the full mark. (I'd estimate a couple quarts at most) I also believe that CAT makes a kit that allows air/oil separation that will allow the excess oil to go back into the pan through a separate fitting. Any other suggestions, or does anyone happen to have the cat part number for the kit, or better yet, an alternative?

thanks
toni

The most common cause of blow by is an over full crank case. 10 gallons is over full for a C9 which takes 34 quarts rather than 40. Drain off the excess and your engine will thank you.

Good luck.

I have an 06 with a C9 and it holds 36qts. Call the CatHotline with the serial # 1-877-777-3126 and they can tell you the right number and if anything has been done to it in the past under warranty. 10 gallon over full. One other thing you need to do a valve adj. if it has not been done, just had mine done at 20k.
