Smitty,

How was the road from Destruction Bay to Tok? We were there in 2012 and it was brutal. could not go over 25 MPH most of the way. Got a chip in the windshield because of the rock truck going 50 MPH, empty or full. Hope you had or having a great trip as we did.

Hi Dave - Yep, still a fun roller coaster ride in 2014:)!

Our worse area was after Destruction Bay, around the Beaver Creek area. And yes, we went real slow... I think we got lucky, as the last stretch just before the border, probably 12-15 miles, was under major construction, smooth graded dirt. Pilot escort, and nice water tank in front of so we had mud, mud, and more mud everywhere... (Glad we held off washing the rig until Tok:)!).

We had our windshield chip going thry Fort St John, when an oil worker flew by us in the median at 80MPH, and cut in right in front of us. The locals call that 'peppering' the tourists... One chip, and one we'll replace the windshield over a silver dollar impact.

Then to top that off, at Whitehorse Hi Country RV Park, they are having a new grid of WiFi installed. The poles are in temporary cement buckets, as the move them around to set up the grid. Poor guy next to me bumped the pole by us as he came back from dinner, and it came right over onto the windshield of our CRV. Drivers side of course. About a 2' deep dent, with the inside shattered enough to need to suck our glass of the driver seat, floor and dash. Amazing how strong and safe the screens are. Would have taken 5-7 days to get a screen into Whitehorse. So I took a day drive up from Tok to Fairbanks and had it replaced. Sure wish this was after Top of The World Highway - but oh well:)!

We are having a blast, some great BIG COUNTRY in Alasaka. And we really enjoyed our Canada travels too...

Best,
Smitty

Smitty,

In 2009 we left White Horse and waited in Dawson City for the Top of the World to open. We were the first big rig across that year and it was a really smooth ride. Came back through Destruction Bay, but took the road very slowly. We did get windshield chips but had them filled in the RV park in White Horse. Don't know about this year, but in '09 perma frost was still an item and we could not get sewer hookups in Fairbanks. Have a great trip

We did not take the MH over the Top of the World Drive... We left it in Tok and drove to Chicken and Dawson City or Creek. We met some of the guys from "Gold Rush" as they were still in Alaska that year. Have Great Travels and enjoy it..

Hi Sharon,

We ran the TOW in the TOAD to just bit North of the Border Crossing. We pulled into Chicken around 1:00PM, sat out a brief but strong thunderstorm and headed out around 2:45PM. Most of the rain was absorbed, just a few spots of muck mud. But, we counted 10-12 down pines over the TOW. One spot, people in 5th's and trailers and yes us in the CRV, had to 'off road' a bit to go around one patch of 5-7 trees blocking the TOW. A DP would not have made it. But, by the time we turned around and came back, the Alaska Worker (one big guy) had finished cutting and pulling the trees out of the way.

Clear sky and the rain/wind got rid of a little haze from the big fire that is working it's way out.

We were early in the season when we crossed over into Canada, but have really stretched it out. We won't hit Fairbanks for another few days, and Denali on 6/9. Then we'll spend 3-4 weeks out one the Kenai (SP?) area, if the fires are out:)!

Really enjoying ourselves, and feel blessed to be seeing this country, and Canada's too...

And we've had very little times when we wished we had smaller then a 40', just planning carefully works well.

Best,
Smitty
