Dash Air Conditioning

Our Chassis Air Conditioning (not Roof AC) is not working correctly. The rear AC unit under the rear bed is blowing cold. With the rear AC working correctly the Dash AC only blows warm air. Since both units run off the Engine AC Compressor I am at a loss as to what is the possible cause for one unit to blow cold and the Dash AC blow warm. Turned the rear AC off and the Dash still blows warm. Anyone have this problem before?

On my rig, the rear and front OTR AC each have their own dryer unit and condenser.
So, I would guess either your gate in the front condenser is not closing off the outside hot air, the dryer has failed, or perhaps your coolant recirculating (school bus) pump is adding hot air to the dash location.
If the dryer has failed, you will need to vacuum the lines and install a new dryer. Fixing this would be the most work.
The other two are just adding or closing a gate valve or closing the door on the heater below the front dash.

When my compressor clutch failed, I lost both AC sources
The dryer for my front AC is in the engine compartment passenger side of the engine below the compressor. You should be able to feel if its lines are cold or not.

Note: I fixed my system myself, but only have enough knowledge about auto AC to be dangerous.

Pete,

Probably the heater valves are allowing hot water to get through. Three solutions.
1. replace the valves
2. cut the heater hose and install a manual valve
3. clamp the hoses(this is what I did when I had the same problem)

Good luck

I think you are confusing the front and rear evaporators and calling them condensers. Though I don't know what you have it is unlikely that you have two condensers. Pete will have one condenser in the cooling pack with the radiator and charge air cooler. The front and rear air handlers each have their own evaps and fans. I think he has hot coolant getting by the valves and heating the chilled air.

Pete,

I experienced the same thing last year, warm air in front, cold in the rear unit. The problem was the front expansion valve, which was blocked. With the age of your coach, I would have the dryer replaced at the same time. We blew out the AC lines to make sure the air dryer desiccant had not entered the system and had plugged the expansion valve.(that did not happen, fortunately) With the parts replaced, and the system recharged everything is good. That system in my Magna will keep the coach cool even in real hot weather.

I just had the same problem last week on a round to Illinois from SC. Try turning the heat/cool control know over to heat and back to cool a couple of times. That corrected my problem. It seems that the door in the ductwork that closes off the hot air from outside gets stuck in the open position. When you turn the knob to heat and back to cool it seems to correct the problem. It solved mine.

Is it only the Magna that has rear OTR AC. On my Allure I think I only have it up front? If I should have a rear one, anyone know how its controlled??

Hi Michael,

We only have the dash A/C. To cool the rest of the coach OTR we run the generator.

Best regards,

You are correct Michael. Only front in Allure. Magna and Affinity have rear, over the road A/C
