2007 Affinity - is it worth it

Yahoo Message Number: 96509
We have a 40' 2006 Intrigue with a 400 Cummins. It is a beautiful coach and overall we love it. However we want more power because we travel mainly in Colorado, Utah and Arizona. We are interested in upgrading to a 600 ISX and would prefer an Affinity. Is it worth the leap?

Only you can decide that, which you know:)!

I will suggest you do the math on the power to weight ratio of both HP and Torque, you maybe surprised at how close they are. Not dinging the BIG BLOCKS, wish we had the BIG CAT in our Allure. However, the big block, bigger Allison 4xxxx trans, bigger drive axles and drive lines, bigger cooling systems, and add in all the extra goodies of an Affinity - and you sometimes find a good portion of that extra power, goes to cover the extra weight, leaving smaller margins than you might expect for hill climbing. Or more important to me, compression braking with a 3 stage vs 2 stage, and those big blocks have more Cubic Inches, thus more stopping brake power.

Our 04 Allure 40' Tag with ISL370, had a better Power to Weight Ration then a 40' 2005 Cat Magna I also test drove. (The Magna had 4 slides vs 2 in the Allure, and that added weight too.)

Affinity is a great coach, so other reasons besides pure power to factor.

Best to you,
Smitty

Tom: we had the exact same combo (400 Intrigue) and just recently went to the 600 Affinity. Wouldn't go back. Mileage is very close to the 400 (which surprised me) unless you decide to really hammer it; then it drops substantially. We're from the West as well (Seattle) and have mostly travelled throughout the West so far. Next year the East coast. The additional power and other conveniences have sold us on the bigger power and coach. It doesn't struggle at all and the 3 speed brake is sooooo nice. Never touched the brake or gas up/down the Grapevine as well as in the Rockies. We got a great deal, so it was a no brainer for us and haven't looked back.

I have a 400 ISL in a 42' Intrigue and weigh 42500 lbs with car in tow.
In the 11 years we have been

driving I( have found I can keep up with any Prevost, Newell or Magna/Affinity with the C-12 or C-13.
But the Magna/Affinity with the 600/650 hp engines I don't have a chance.
Traveling over the Cascades

or Sierras I'm not even close. But unless I'm running over 70 mph to keep from getting run over on I-

10 where the speed limit is 80 and everyone is doing 85 I can easily maintain 8 mpg, providing my fan

controller is working properly. Trying to keep up with big Magnas traveling up I-25 to Albuquerque and Denver can be very embarrassing. So I learned a long ago to stay away from you guys with big blocks

and enjoy my own pace. 67 mph when in a hurry, otherwise 63mph and just below the posted speed

limit on two lane roads where I like to travel the most. TWI 2004Intrigue 11731

We appreciate everyone that has given us their thoughts about the pros/cons of Affinity and Magna as we make a decision on our next coach. Still shopping!

Thanks,
