Not the easiest route. North of Silverton to Ouray it gets hairy, not recommended by the Truck Atlas as well. Three passes around 11,000 ft., but the courageous will try anything . . . Plan B - to Cortez, then 491 and 141 to I-70. If you did try 550, you'd end up in the same waypoint anyway - Grand Junction.

If I were you I would drive back to Glenwood Springs, over to Grand Junction and then down to Montrose on the first Day. Then the next day to Ouray and be very patient getting to Silverton, then its over two

high passes and a long way down hill to Durango. I've done it with a Airstream 34' travel trailer, a 36' Allure, and a 43' Intrigue. The real issue is your driving experience and weather your co-pilot has a

strong stomach. If you driven a lot on two lane Mountain roads and no how to shift down and are

familar with size of your coach you'll be fine. You can't drive over the pass to Buena Vista and come in

that way, you are to long and wide. The other way is to keep going west on 70 and come down thru

Moab to Cortez and over one hill to Durango. If you don't want any hills go down to Shiprock to

Farmington and then up to Durango, where there are only two small grades.

My advice is don't. US 550 from Ouray to Durango is very narrow and twisty, with no guard rails and very steep dropoffs. It is a lovely drive in the toad. Some people drive it in big rigs, but I wouldn't do it. You will not be able to take your eyes off the road for a second, and if you come around one of the blind curves and meet another big rig or a tractor-trailer coming the other way, you could have a huge problem.

A good work-around is to take route 62 west at Ridgway, then 145 south to US 160, then east to Durango. It is a lovely ride and you can stop at Telluride, which is a great place to visit.

Further to the above, 550 is fine between Silverton and Durango. It is between Ouray and Silverton where it is dicey.

I have done this only once in RV 37'Allure. From Ouray (sp) to Silveryon is slow go first gear. Going down other side to Durango is slow for the first miles then improves. Jim SpiveySent from Yahoo Mail for iPhone From:

Couple of weeks ago drove from Ouray to Silverton in 40 foot tag. It was interesting and makes you focus but not really a problem. I did unhook the toad. The first 12 miles out of Ouray is the most attention getting. Also Ouray north to Montrose is not a problem. Have not been on the rest of the route' Dan 2006 Allure 40ft with tag
