Step's Stuck

Yahoo Message Number: 96922
My power step was sluggish when I took possession of my 2008 Allure in June. It seems to have been improving; but today it quit working halfway in. I believe the switch has electricity because the step makes a little clunking sound when the button is pressed to go either way. I tried some pushing and shoving with the switch held but to no avail.
Is there somewhere I can look and gain access to its "innards"? I'm guessing, in advance, there's no access from above and that it requires pulling the generator out and crawling underneath?

Has anyone experienced this problem of know of a DIY fix? Thanks.

On ours, the step mechanism is exposed underneath. I crawl underneath and have access to everything. Suspect yours is similar--no need to more the generator. If it is stuck, you may have one of the bolts loose or missing in the arms of the actuating mechanism. We had to replace our control unit--not too bad of a job.

Jerry,

If you have not looked closely... at the outside portion of the the step is an "L" bracket and the rod that open and closes the step cover is attached to it. You can use a crescent wrench to take off the bolt and take the step cover off and see if you can tell what is binding it up. Or you can get at the motor bolts underneath the coach. I had to open the generator open all the way out and use a 7/16" socket with a long extension to take the 4 bolts off. It will come out far enough to get a the electrical connection in the area underneath the floor. My motor went bad and since I could not get the same motor, I worked on it for about 1 1/2 weeks making new brackets for it.. Good Luck

Dave,

Thanks for responding. Your 2007 430 and my 2008 470 Allures should be peas in a pod; but that may not be the case. My step cover is stuck in mid travel. It's about 10" from its stow position. It appears to be a plywood surface with another piece attached to the front dropping down at a 90. The whole thing, including the joint, is covered with carpet. It lifts as far as the main floor will let it; so, there's nothing tying it on the sides. It seems to swivel from its rear up under the main floor. That's probably the attachment point for the rod you refer to. Unless I break the front drop down off, there doesn't appear to be any hardware showing like the L bracket you talked about. I might try pulling the carpet off the front; but I don't want to and still not be able to see the rod attachment point.
The main floor has a metal edging piece that can be removed. The step well cover slides under it. I don't think taking it off will reveal anything. The coach step below has a trim piece that can be removed and possibly allow the step kick piece to come out. Donno.
So, I guess my question is can you describe more where the hardware can be seen? Jerry

Jerry,

You can not get to anything by removing the carpet. Waste of your time. My suggestion is that you move the generator all the way out. Rise the front of the coach up as far as it will go and crawl underneath it. Basically on the right side of the coach towards the middle you should see four small bolts. these 4 bolts hold the motor down. with them removed you will be able to move the step out towards the right side of the vehicle. Depending on the length of the wires to the motor it should allow you to move the step out far enough to get to that bolt that connect the motor rod and step. I not near mine coach to take pictures.

Jerry, Follow up.

The area where the step stores itself is just a cavity. At least mine was. A metal floor where the motor is bolted to. 2 metal walls and the floor of the coach where I have floor tiles. I guess you could force the front down portion off of the step, but by removing those bolts from the motor you should be able to get to that single bolt that is attached to the mounting bracket. I guess I got lucky as mine stopped working, when it was in the storage position, not out covering the steps. What happened to me is the motor that was in it the rod was on the right side portion of the motor. None were available, so the next motor had the rod exiting the motor in the middle. approx 1/2" difference. this is why I had some problems putting it all back together.

Jerry, I have a similar coach and I was able to access the underside of my step cover (and remove it) by extending it all the way and reaching under it from the bottom step (coach door open, of course). There is a threaded rod attached to the motor and it runs through the previously mentioned L bracket. Loosen the outer nut and you can slide the cover off the rod and remove it.
Remember, when the step cover is fully extended it covers both steps but there is a gap between the bottom step and the edge of that piece that hangs from the step cover itself.

I have fought the issue for 10 years until Eric at Premiere Motor coach RV service center in Tucson, by

passed the micro switches at either end of the step mechanism transport shuttle. That was 16 months

ago and it has worked without fail . Thee times the previous record.
