Use of Bleach to disinfect fresh water tank and plumbing - Not Good

Hi Folks,

There has been posts in the past on the subject of approaches to disinfection.
However if bleach (diluted sodion hypocloride) is used, it wiil render the carbon inline internal filter useless in as little as 200 gallons passing through it.
If disinfection is done, the filter must be removed and by-passed and at least three purges with water are required to lower the bleach concentration to a residual level. That is a big time consuming job. 5% bleach is 50,000 ppm and adding one gallion to a 100 gal fresh water tank reduces the concentration to 500 ppm. I fill the fresh water tank with soft water which the water district introduces about 1 ppm residual of a mixture of ammonia and chlorine. If the water is not used up in 2 weeks after returning from a trip, I drain the system to prevent the start of algae buildup.
