Direct TV

Has anyone been successful in getting Direct TV to do a service call while on the road?  We have an equipment failure and have been told that they will only dispatch a tech to our account address.

if we hadnt just sunk several thousand into equipment I would be taking a very different approach to this problem.  Unfortunately they know that.

We've had the same thing happen, but we were heading home, so it worked out.  But yours sounds very serious.  I wonder if you'd consider calling a local business representing DirecTV and tell them you'll pay for the service call.

Darrell,

I had a failure of a box while on the road and they sent me a replacement box by FedEx/UPS to my next location.
I sent the bad box back to them and all was well.  I have always maintained that this equipment was in an RV and the address they have is a mailing address for me.  It took me about 1/2 hr though to go thru their TECH SUPPORT before they decided that it was a bad box and would send me another one.

If you can not convince the "Associate" on the phone that the equipment is in a RV, ask to speak to a supervisor sometimes that helps.  Squeaky wheel gets the LUBE...

YES----

Call Direct TV and tell them you would like to have an upgrade policy for I think it was 6 dollars a month. This will allow you to have them come out anytime and do upgrades to you TV and answer any questions.

IF YOU GET THIS SERVICE IT WILL INCLUDE A SERVICE CALL FOR FREE. YOU HAVE TO BE NEAR A CITY THAT HAS DIRECT TV SERVICE.

unfortunately not.  Their techs are not familiar with RV setup.  Even if they do come out, they will just scratch their heads and do nothing. They have no idea how RV's are wired.  We asked a DirecTV tech who happened to be in a park where we stayed and he didn't have a clue.

Do you know what equipment failure you have?  If it's a receiver they will ship one to your home or to a mobile sat tech.

We use Sats2Go in Houston TX. He is the RV satellite "guru" and has worked on ours several times. His prices are reasonable and he is prompt and professional.

There is also one in Oregon that Country Coach used to install our sat systems. Maybe Kevin Waite remembers the name of the company.

I am getting ready to ditch Direct as we speak ! What kind of equipment failure U R experiencing but if it is a reciever, you can buy these at any camping world store. If it is satellite, any Caming World store can service it. By the way, if you have thousands tied up in equipment, I would think that you can also get Dish, but don't expect them to be much better, but you can always tell Direct that U R going to Dish.

Whenever you talk with DirecTV, always ask for the Customer Retention Group (CRG).  They will always want to "solve" your problem with the personnel at the call center that you initially reach (usually in the Philippines), but persistence pays off.  With CRG, you get a person in the US who speaks and understands English.  I've found that they can solve most of my continuous hassles (been going on for 15 years).
The call center folks operate from a screen that has only the basics.  They are trained to mollify you at the least possible cost.

Thank you everyone for the suggestions.  We will muscle through until we get home now, since we are near crater lake where we should have better things to do anyway.I tried to change my address and the woman from the call center in Mississippi said no.  In retrospect i would have changed my address then called for service.  I will surely ask to be put directly through to customer retention next time. If i had known how this was all going to work my husband would not have his $2500 satellite and cadillac tv programming, which was just installed in February. Hi Frank, your comment regarding DISH and changing your service address when traveling piques my interest. Does this allow you to receive local programming where you're staying? And if so, can you accomplish the change of address using online Dish account tools, or must you speak with a customer care rep?
I typically sign up for 1 or 2 months of service at a time and rarely am in my home programming market... gripes me to pay for my local channels and not have access to them.

We've had Directv for over 15 years and have been happy with them.  They are not set up to troubleshoot RV satellite systems.  They did ship a receiver to our satellite tech in Houston.  He had another one in his truck, installed it immediately and replaced his inventory with the one Directv shipped to him.

Do you know what part failed? What error message are you getting? What type and brand satellite and what type of receivers do you have? Where did you have the system installed?

Maybe with more info we could help. We've been to the school of hard knocks with satellite stuff!

The name of the company that Country Coach used to install satellites is Advanced Satellite in Junction City Oregon.  They only do RV satellite systems.  (see link below)

In feb We had a new Windguard traveler dish installed.  While in AZ we had a main receiver installed that feeds the tv in the living room  That splits off to a bridge/router that sends wireless signal to the bedroom.  the living room tv has strong signal and works just fine. Logic would say the problem is the bridge or wireless receiver.  The error is 771 unable to connect to satellite.  This is 100% new equipment but it has all worked successfully until now. When I escalated yesterday the manager said it was a wineguard problem.  Of course it isnt, but I called wineguard and they helped me confirm that the satellite is working just fine. The good news is this evening we received an automated phone call survey on our service experience. Based on our responses the automated lady said someone will call

John -yes, by changing your address while travelling, you are able to receive local news - thats why I always do that, John..... and I have learned with Direct TV, you dont call and ASK to change your address, you call those knuckleheads, tell them you have moved, and here is your new address, and you need service.....I dont explain anything to them - you can get some real knotheads at Direct TV.

We have had two receivers replaced while on the road. After talking with tech support and they ran thru their  diagnostic tests it was agreed the receiver was bad and they fed ex'd a new one to my RV location. Our records do show that the TV is the one in the RV.

You have to get to their higher level of support to get them to run the systems tests.

You don't want a DirectTV tech who is used to working in stick houses. Find a local mobile tech.

Dan: Something that might help you might be a plug in surge arrester  for your receiver if you don't already have one. Since you have already had two of these to go bad it may be voltage spikes. As you know, RVs are notorious for this.

This is true!! When you call the call center ur wasting your time. You can do about any thing that they can do on their automatic phone system.and at least you can understand what the machine says!!

If the Winegard tests good and the bedroom receiver tests good, and if you have service in the living room but not the bedroom (after the wireless bridge) it seems logical that the problem is the bridge. Either bad bridge or bad cable to bridge.

I would call the person that installed it.  When we had a bad component installed by our satellite tech in Houston, we went back to him and he replaced it at no charge because it was still under warranty. Does the bridge belong to DirecTV??  If not, it's the problem of the installer.

I know this is probably too simple but sure the button for rear TV on the Winegard distribution box is on "satellite"  - sometimes we forget to change it back from antenna, cable to satellite and get that error message.
