Kwikee Steps

Hi Folks,

My steps have not opened and closed properly for years.
I finally disconnected the linkages and found that the lower step was binding in the 1st 5-6" of travel.
After removing the step from the slide rail, I found that both sliderails operate smoothly and easily. There are abrasion lines on the sides of the rails?.
If I lay the step back in place without re-attaching it to the rails, the binding problem recurs. It's as if the step is too wide.
I have measured and re-measured, checking both the box and the step for squareness by measuring diagonals. Every thing is perfect. Nothing is out of kilter except that the step appears too wide for the opening in its last bit of inward travel. I'm at my wits ends as to how to fix the problem.
Has anyone dealt with this issue?

Unless this is the series 42 step IMO I would replace it! Not worth the pain and misery for something that is used every time anyone enters or exits the coach...

Hi Dave,

Mine does somewhat of the same thing, but to such a small degree it isn't worth fixing.  It only scratches off the paint which I redo occasionally. If I were going to try to fix the issue, I would take careful width measurements of the frame with the steps removed, take a small hydraulic bottle jack and and appropriate length of wood, and try to spread the frame SLIGHTLY in the subject locations. Might work.

Thanks Don, I've already tried all of that. The box that the steps retract into is extremely sturdy. Reinforced by two heavily welded cross members on the bottom. The only thing that I succeeded in doing was putting enough warp into one of the slide rails to deform it just enough that it made the problem slightly worse.

Dave,

I have seen numerous Country Coaches that have the Kwikee folding steps installed as opposed to the Series 42. I would agree that most CC's have the series 42 but not all.

Barney,

Folding steps may be on some rigs. I'd be surprised if they came from CC that way.
