Inverters

Our 10 year old inverter has failed and I don't want to put any more money into this one. I don't think I really need a pure sine wave inverter (we prefer the LP frig and have a low voltage electric blanket) but are there any other advantages to pure sine over the old modified?

If I did switch to sine wave are there any modifications to the wiring? Any recommendations on a 3000 W replacement?

Thanks,

Jim,

I would like to know what happened when your inverter failed. Did it stop all together or stop working just some the time? I think mine might need to be changed. Every once in a while I have to turn it off and on.

Hi Jim,

We also have an Inspire and unless you have done some major modifications to the wiring in your coach a 3000 watt inverter/charger would be a waste. The 3000 watt has two 120 volt circuits coming out of the inverter. You Inspire is only wired for 1 circuit. If you need to replace yours now is the time to step up to a pure sine wave unit. Your microwave and TV might be working OK with what you have but the pure sine wave will be much easier on them helping them last longer. You never know what you might want to add in the future also. There are no modifications required to install the pure sine wave except I believe the cord for the control panel will need a minor modification to work with the Magnum.

This is what you need for your Inspire. Also recommend you add the control panel.

Just a personal note. Stay away from Xantrex. I made that mistake and won't do it again.

About 2 years ago if just stopped delivering AC power from the batteries or from shore and that was a $500 circuit board repair. There is also a transfer switch in the inverter that failed once, the only symptom was the shore power wouldn't flow out of the inverter.

This time I'm not sure what happened but it built up so much heat it fried the insulation off the AC connection wires and shorted out. I'm guessing that the only reason there was no fire was the lack of oxygen. We just woke up to no AC and when I opened the inverter bay a cloud of smoke rolled out..

We had the Magnum 2812 PSW inverter installed with a new controller ( http://www.ebay.com/itm/like/151619447045?rmvSB=true ) and they did not have to run any new wires. The Xantrex Freedom 458 uses 6 wires to the controller and the magnum uses only 4 wires so they dropped the 2 outside wires on the phone clips. We did have the Samsung 197 RR frig installed at the same time because the Not-So-Cold was living up to its name. One of the best moves we have ever made.

Jim.

There might be a change in the wiring from the controller to the inverter but it isn't a major thing. You need to check the pin outs on your current setup to that of the inverter you install, usually it is a flip of a couple of wires in the connector.
Like the others, I installed a Magnum Energy PSW inverter. While you are at it, go ahead and add the auto gen start module and the battery monitor module. These two modules will allow total control of the inverter and charging of the batteries.
On the Magnum controller, there are two settings for AGM batteries that you need to be aware of. One setting is for "generic" AGM and the other setting is for Lifeline AGM's. It is all spelled out in their very complete manual.
Anything in the coach that you run off of the inverter will be much happier with a PSW.
Someone mentioned iMarine as a source for the inverter and I totally agree. I spend some time checking prices and they were the best by far.

Jerry Lewis, who monitors this web sight, had a 3000 watt inverter he was wanting to sell.
you may want to contact Jerry to see if he still has it if you might be interested.

Yep, I got one.  Xantrex 3000 PSW, put in by prev owner ~2011.  It's currently in my coach but have the Magnum ready to swap.  Just haven't done it, yet.  The X3000 does fine, so far as I can tell; but I haven't taken coach boo docking. If you are going to be hooked up almost all the time, the Xantrex should do fine.  If you camp unhooked a lot, its monitors and controls are not friendly to those wanting to know Ahrs and current watts, and so on.  I'll take it out, box it up and send it to you "as is" for $600 plus shipping.
