Smart Wheel

'm having trouble with my smart wheel.  When I flashed my courtesy lights,  the windshield wipers came on and I couldn't turn them off.  Plus,  nothing else worked on the smart wheel including the horn.  So,  I pulled over and shut the ignition off and the wipers stopped and stayed off after turning the ignition back on.  Continued driving and everything worked fine for a few miles until I hit the resume on cruise and then windshield wipers came on again and couldn't be turned off with a dead smart wheel. I  Allen the company and they advised it could be the clock spring which I saw mentioned on here during a search. I removed the top cover and didn't see anything obvious.  I tightened the center steering wheel nut and got a little more than an eighth of a turn and also sealed the J1 connectors with some good electrical spray. One thing I'm not sure of is the clock spring.  I couldn't identify it with the center cover removed.  There is a 4 wire connector in there with the wires routed down close to the center.  Does anyone know what the clock spring looks like and where to get one,  or even just the part number?  I assume the whole steering wheel has to be removed?  We're in Anthem,  AZ right now,  right outside of Phoenix. Thanks for any insight.

I had similar symptoms last year with the wipers coming on and not turning off and the horn not working.  I did have to have the clock spring replaced.  If I remember correctly it cost me about $700, parts and labor.

Looks like we are in the same situation with things beginning to not work.  Grateful to know about the cost of around $700.  Heading to I State tomorrow to have the dash AC looked at and with any luck only have the R132 recharged.  If that's not it, I'll be  asking for help as to other possibilities.  And I'll be asking about the Smart Wheel clock spring too.  Thanks.

You may want to have them look at your wiring. I had smart wheel , dash ac, jake brake, brake and blinker light issues and took it in to CAT. I had several wires/relays that had come undone. Got them all reconnected and harnessed properly and it all works great now.

Mike, we arrived at Massey's at 7:00 and we're driving out of there at 8:30 with  a fully functional Smart wheel after they changed the clock spring. Thanks for recommending Massey! Larry, 03 Allure 30856
