Had to replace fan controller the fan does not run when the engine is started is this normal or should it run at low speed till engine warms up and more speed is required as temp rises?

Tommy,

When you first start your engine the fan should run on high for a second or two then it will slow down to a point where you can't actually hear it running, but if you look at it it appears to be turning very fast. The fan should never be fully stopped when the engine is running. At least that is how my Cummins works. Some of the early fan controllers would stop the fan completely but they had problems with the fan mounting hardware breaking when the fan would go from stopped to high speed in an instant. I think all the fan controllers have been reprogrammed to keep the fan running at a low speed all the time.

Does the fan come on when the engine gets up to operating temps?

Just info sharing on this post, as it is Fan Controller related.

Mine has acted up two times now. Both times, a cleaning of the harness with electrical cleaner has got things working again. But, after reading about some people, CC's and SOB's with the same controller, being onto their third replacement - I decided to go with the Source Engineering Wax Valve solution. Depending upon how lucky you are on the replacement units, it's about the same, sometimes a bit more. But, it should be a 'one time fix'. And, I really liked the infinitely variable fan speeds, vs the multiple jump set point of the OEM install. Very possible it will divert more power to the wheels, then being needed to feed the fan.

Have a grand total of about 400 miles on the coach after Source Engineering did a real clean install job. And also had the OEM thermostat replaced as things were apart, so not sure if the temp differences I'm seeing are caused by the new thermostat or the the Wax Valve. Running about 5-7 degrees warmer then I used to, around the 190-195 mark, where it used to run + of - a few degrees from 185.

Worth researching if you have a failed fan controller.

Best to all, be safe, have fun,

Smitty
