Rodents in plumbing bay

Hi Everyone,

I recently have been dealing with having my entire plumbing bay re-plumbed as a result of a rat which got into the bay.  I'm not sure where it came from but I believe it happened at an RV park on the Oregon Coast.  I'm thinking the rat may have climbed up the drain hose and made itself at home chewing everything up.  At any rate my insurance is taking care of most of the cost of the repair.  My question to everyone is "How have you protected your coach from rodents, ground squirrels and the like while your coach is in storage or parked at an RV park of a period of time?  I also discovered a pile of acorns behind the generator up on top of the fuel tank.  Appreciate any help or suggestions on this topic as I do not want to deal with this again.

Thank you for your post, Randy and Sue.  We worry about that, and after our coach was in our driveway in a rural area SE of the Twin Cities in MN, for a few weeks between trips, we had a little family of mice.  They were easy to get rid of, but we sure don't  know how they got in.  So we'll be looking forward to any responses this post gets.  We also had a bird build a nest in the outside vent for the air intake on the driver's side back by the engine, and for that to not happen again, Mike put a piece of mesh  so that won't happen.  But we'll be happy to learn about keeping rodents out.  Thank you.

a post from RV [/size] I had at one time a horrible rodent problem! The rodents chewed up the wiring harness to my genset! I've tried everything suggested on RV.Net and was successful with three Peppermint Oil, Steel Wool and Pestchaser Pro.
I quit using Peppermint Oil due to it was too much work constantly soaking the cotton balls in all the nooks and crannies in a RV. The Pestchaser Pro made by Victor is a electronic device 10 times larger then those small electronic devices that you plug into a wall outlet! It kind of resembles a small boom box! Lastly,
I used #00 Course Steel Wool! I used cases of this stuff and packed it tightly behind every drawer and runway that I could get too in my RV. I can honestly tell you that I haven't had any rodents in my RV since, and it's been several years now! I went all out because I don't want anymore $1,000.00 repairs due to rodents. I finally got real aggressive with them!

A wad of dog hair worked for me. I tucked some inside the bays and next to the engines. Use plastic bags and poke holes to keep it neat; just make sure the bags do not seal. I never saw the squirrels again!

Put dryer sheets in the bay and or near any place they can get in.  We never had a mouse after doing that.

One thing to try is cab fresh. It's a herbal product. Costs about $17 for a package of 3. We had problems with our fifth wheel and I put it in the hatch area. Haven't used it in our country coach yet. We just bought our coach and it is sitting in our yard. Hmmm - maybe I should look into that again.

They have those electrical plug ins now. One in bays while plugged in of course to shore power normally takes care of it. Walmart has them rodent repellent ultra sonic sound.

 My bug guy told me dryer sheets dry up in a few days and I assume most other things dry out. I had to put traps around the living area to get rid of the family of mice inside the coach. There are entry points to YOUR living space that might not have been sealed or have opened up due to age or bumping down the road. Look around and you might find some. I did!
