Mountain bike on back of motorhome

We recently traded out fifth wheel and truck in for a Country Coach motorhome. When we had the fifth wheel we had a bike hitch on the back with our mountain bikes. But they got really messed up - lots of jiggling back there. We need to buy a car to tow, plus get all of the apparatus to do so this spring. I'm wondering if there is a setup that will work to be able to put the bikes on the motorhome along with the car. The other choice is to just load the bike inside the car, but that would probably only hold one bike and not two. We are also looking to buy a used Honda CRV as we have heard it would be easy to tow. Any advice on the two setup is also appreciated.

Last summer I was in the same boat. I decided on a Cadillac Srx (small suv) with a reese hitch on it already. The SRX needs only to slip in neutral (via small screwdriver in a slot on the console) and let it run 5 minutes before and after towing. We carry two mountain bikes on the SRX.

Roadmaster makes a dual drop receiver that slides into your motorhome receiver and then you can attach your toad and your bike rack to the back of your coach.

I chose the SRX because of the simplicity of towing and the fact that it was still under warranty so I could get the extended warranty. Towing procedures are listed in the manual so it's covered by warranty. It pulls very well and no discharge problems-very simple. It also provides decent storage when traveling.  The sales price was substantially under blue book and it only had 23k miles on it.

In our part of the world, West Texas the Honda dealers are unloading their last couple of dozen CR-Vs from 2014 and you can get a great deal.  The new 2015 can't be towed with the new transmission with the slip belt.  So I would jump in now before they are gone.  Our 2012 has been very dependable, with only two small recalls that took an hour to fix.  We can get over 32 mpg if we stay under 72 mph and have gotten as high as 34.  Stop and go driving on hilly roads is its down fall, however where milage can drop to 21 mpg.  The little 4 is peppy, but the low torque makes it a gas guzzler on short trips in town.  Its solidly built with nary a squeak or rattle.  I don't like the tires that came with the car, and will be replacing them.  They really howl on Oregon roads with large pebbles in the asphalt.  TWI 2004 Intrigue 11731

If you have an extension or drop adapter from your coach hitch you can use a bolt on 2" receiver from Harbor Freight or Walmart.  Just use the U-bolts to bolt it on top of your drop adapter and use a standard 2" receiver bike carrier.  I did this for a while when I was towing a Ford Fusion.  I now tow a Chevy Silverado and just put the carrier on the truck hitch.

Camping world sells a duel receiver drop hitch for just this purpose its part #is 34685. I have one on my 2005 inspire. I have a Yakima two bike rack that works just great with plenty of clearance to my towed.

When we had our CC, we towed a CRV.
We mounted the bikes on the back of the CRV.
It works well because it allows you to take the bikes to other locations without the MOHO.

We tow a 2012 CRV and have a nice two bike rack that attaches to the hatch door of the CRV. We go it from Etrailer.com. I don't use it now since I added a ladder to the coach and hang my bike from the ladder. You can also install a hitch receiver on the CRV and then there are plenty of bike carriers you can attach to the hitch receiver.

If you do get the dual drop receiver and mount the bikes on the motorhome make sure that it doesn't stick out too far behind your coach that the bikes could damage the hood of your toad on a sharp turn.

Mount a bike rack on your tow car. This way, when you camp, you can drive w/bikes to any remote trailhead. Bike rack type is based on your car, your preference, and $$$. You will probably seldom travel in the coach w/o the tow car.  You can also haul bikes when you travel w/o the coach.
I use a 2" receiver hitch with a hitch mount bike rack. This matches the receiver in my coach. I can then use the bike rack on the car or the Coach as needed. (It also allows the car to tow a trailer if it's ever desired.)

I've towed a 2002 CR-V since it was new behind three different motorhomes.  I had a hitch receiver put on the back of it and use a flat/fold down bike rack that carries two mountain bikes.  This set up has worked fine for more than 50,000 miles (though not all with the bikes on it).  Love the CR-V  and have taken care of the battery drain issue by mounting an A/B switch in the little cut out on the dash that by passes the fuse (can't remember which number it is) that controls all of the dash drains when the key is in accessory position.  Very simple.  I idle the engine/run ti through the gears at the end of each day's drive.
 My concern about mounting the bikes between the car and the motorhome would be all the junk they the motorhome kicks up when the road is wet...cleaning the car is bad enough!  I'm very happy with the entire set-up.  I've driven the car 70k and towed it 50K and have had absolutely no problems.

I have a 2-bicycle carrier that mounts on the ladder of my coach. It works great, only cost $40 bucks at Camping World, doesn't get in the way of towing anything, and is only a nuisance if you need to open the engine access panel (you have to loosen or remove the bikes to do so).
