Temp warning light with Silverleaf reading OK?

04 Allure ISL370 CAPS era engine.

Temp Warning Light came on, at the top of a grade (twice now), with Silverleaf and dash gauge indicating OK temps. (We usually run around 180, and at the top of the grades we were seeing 197 per Silverleaf. Which has been the norm since changing to Final Charge two years ago. In real hot weather, climbing long rough grades (Like Interstate 17 climbing North towards Flagstaff.), we've seen 207 temps. This was pre change to Final Charge and Transyn change tot he Allison. Highest I've seen since then, is a nudge above 200.

At no time, did the Temp Warning Light come on, at those earlier times with above 200 temps.

Curious on if the Warning Light is fed a signal from a different sensor then the Silverleaf?

I did have some problems around 4th of July, where we lost two gallons of coolant as two compression nuts had worked a bit loose. Their are some sensors down the the Passenger side of the block, in front of the starter area, that had been exposed to this coolant leakage. (Three of them, assume one is oil, not sure what the other two are. Assumed the coolant temp would be up closer to where the return hose exited?)

I did over the 4th of July, also unplugged and cleaned the harness that feeds the Fan Controller.

OK - Enough background:)! Any thoughts on what/which sensors I should check to see if they're going out, or if the connections need cleaning?

TIA,

Smitty

My coach heated up yesterday .  I have a 2003 allure., 40 foot tag with cummins 375 ILS.  Light came on, went up high grade..  Temp went to 220.  Light came on.  At top it cooled down to 180 fast enough.  I turned motor Ac off, still got hot.    Is this normal ?  Should I tried to go slower?  I was doing about 45 mph.

The Allison guys advised me to "work off the back of the transmission" i.e. shift down on grades. I have noticed the engine runs cooler when doing that.

(May become a double post, sorry!)

Bob - That seems a bit high. I'd suggest maintenance of the cooling system in general. Clean the radiator, if the coolant is due, change it. (Recommend Final Charge, or similar, as it and a shift to Transyn in the Allison - dropped my temps on average 5-10 degrees.

You also may want o have the Fan Controller checked, to be sure the fan is kicking into high speed when it should.

And also yes to Michael's input. We can see the hills, and pro actively downshift. Where as the Cummins and Allison brains, are reactive, and sometime a bit too late to keep the rpm's up. I find that on our ISL370 CAPS, that 2000-2200 rpm is the best for hill climbing.  And, it does help keep the engine running cooler.

I just get myself confused on why I'm now getting the Red Warning Light 'Hot Temp' when the gauge and Silverleaf settings all seem OK temp wise. Wife asked which to believe, and I said that two out of three match - so I'm going with the Red Warning Light 'Hot Temp' being false. Two sensors? One for the ECM/Gauges and one of the 'Hot Temp' light???

Best to all, and thanks for any other thoughts,

Smitty

I have the same issue. The red light temp will come on some times when the temp on silver leaf is 200 or 202. I don't know the exact temp the red light is supposed to start getting red but I believe the leaf. I have asked several Cummings dealers what temp it should come and they say around 205 degrees.

Smitty, the Silverleaf is receiving it's information on Coolant Temp. from the Engine ECM. The Engine Coolant Sensor is located on the driver side of engine as you're looking into the Engine Hatch. This Sensor is a few inches above the Coolant Inlet Hose going into the block and below the Engine Thermostat  and being  behind the Alternator it's tough to get to.

I've tried to get to physically get to it through the engine hatch and from the ground and can't and I'm skinny as a rail.

Even though you say the Engine Warning light didn't come on, it could been very momentary, so I'd check you Silverleaf diagnostic Engine History to see if a fault was recorded. The only other Coolant Temp sensor I'm aware of is the on feeding info to the Sauer Dan Foss Fan Controller.
